Abstract: In this work, a computer vision sensor for the extraction of slug length, slug velocity and phase ratio from capillary liquid–liquid slug flows from video feeds in real-time, including the necessary post-processing algorithms, is developed. The developed sensor is shown to be capable of simultaneously monitoring multiple capillaries and provides reasonable accuracy at less than 3.5% mean relative error. Subsequently, the sensor is used for the control of a parallelized and actively regulated dual-channel slug flow capillary microreactor setup. As a model reaction, the solvent-free epoxidation of methyl oleate with hydrogen peroxide and a phase-transfer catalyst based on tungstophosphoric acid and a quaternary ammonium salt to yield the product 9,10-epoxystearic acid methyl ester is conducted. A space–time yield of 0.679 kg L−1 h−1 is achieved.2023-09-11T00:00:00ZTheoretical studies on a rotating film reactor for hydrogen production from methaneBecker, TobiasAgar, David W.http://hdl.handle.net/2003/423712024-03-04T23:13:13Z2022-03-23T00:00:00ZTitle: Theoretical studies on a rotating film reactor for hydrogen production from methane

Abstract: A film of liquid metal can protect the reactor wall from carbon deposits during methane pyrolysis, discharge carbon from the reactor and prevent blocking. The film can be generated by rotation in a rotating film reactor. Parameters such as liquid volume flow, operating mode or the diameter of the reactor can have an influence on the reaction behavior. A design of experiments was used to investigate the rotating film reactor in more detail and to characterize the influence of various parameters.2022-03-23T00:00:00ZAnalysis and simplification of kinetic models for methane chlorination and pyrolysisKeuchel, FlorianHeinlein, MoritzHohlmann, JanAgar, David W.http://hdl.handle.net/2003/423702024-03-04T23:13:13Z2022-03-10T00:00:00ZTitle: Analysis and simplification of kinetic models for methane chlorination and pyrolysis

Abstract: So far, no complete reaction mechanism has been proposed for high temperature chlorination and pyrolysis of methane. Various mechanisms for the description of this reaction pathway are combined and compared in this paper. This adaptation shows that the gas phase pyrolysis of methane and methyl chloride can be combined with surface reactions via nucleation from the gas phase or on the reactor wall to reproduce the product spectrum. In addition, kinetic parameters for a global simplified one-step mechanism focused on the formation of carbon are fitted to available experimental data.2022-03-10T00:00:00ZSystematic simulation strategy of plasma methane pyrolysis for CO2-free H2Magazova, AliyaBöddeker, SimonBibinov, NikitaAgar, David W.http://hdl.handle.net/2003/423592024-02-27T23:13:11Z2022-03-24T00:00:00ZTitle: Systematic simulation strategy of plasma methane pyrolysis for CO2-free H2

Abstract: Recently, the direct conversion of methane into hydrogen using cold plasma reactors has attracted increasing attention, since hydrogen has considerable potential as a future feedstock in the steel and chemical industries. However, the simulation of plasma pyrolysis reactors is extremely complex due to the vast temporal and spatial ranges of the variables involved and steep gradients. Previously, methane pyrolysis has been meticulously modeled by 0D simulations, and 3D plasma modeling has been largely confined to Argon systems. In this paper, a systematic methodology is presented, which provides an expedient and efficient hierarchy of 0D to 3D simulations, in order to approximate the methane pyrolysis simulation of a plasma reactor in its entirety. Various simulation tools are applied in a coordinated and pragmatic manner. The results show that the proposed synergy allows simplification of the reaction set and arc characteristics, significantly reducing the runtime required for the simulations.2022-03-24T00:00:00ZExperimental splitting of hydrogen sulfide by halogens for application in reaction cyclesWiesehahn, MaximilianZimmermann, Elodia MoralesAgar, David W.http://hdl.handle.net/2003/423382024-02-19T23:13:10Z2022-04-21T00:00:00ZTitle: Experimental splitting of hydrogen sulfide by halogens for application in reaction cycles

Abstract: Hydrogen sulfide is a toxic gas that is almost always present in the processing of crude oil or natural gas and must be removed. In addition, hydrogen can be used as an energy carrier if it can be separated from H2S. In this work, as the first step of a reaction cycle that could achieve just that, the bromination and chlorination of hydrogen sulfide are experimentally studied. It can be shown that both halogens are capable of completely converting hydrogen sulfide in a gas phase reaction. While the chlorination can produce byproducts, the bromination is free of such.2022-04-21T00:00:00ZFilmreaktorkonzepte und Strategien zur Vermeidung und Entfernung von Kohlenstoffablagerungen bei der MethanpyrolyseBecker, Tobiashttp://hdl.handle.net/2003/423302024-02-15T23:13:16Z2023-01-01T00:00:00ZTitle: Filmreaktorkonzepte und Strategien zur Vermeidung und Entfernung von Kohlenstoffablagerungen bei der Methanpyrolyse
Authors: Becker, Tobias
The path to a more carbon-neutral future inevitably involves decarbonizing the key economic sectors of energy, construction, transport, industry and agriculture. Hydrogen plays a major role on this path, as energy storage, energy carrier or fuel.
Zero-emission hydrogen can be produced using renewable energies via methane pyrolysis. The by-product carbon contributes to the economic efficiency of the process, but also creates challenges in process engineering. Accumulation of carbon inevitably ends with clogging of the reactor.
Various reactor concepts were studied to prevent and remove carbon deposits. A liquid metal film protects the wall from deposits within the falling film reactor and the rotating film reactor. Both reactors were studied experimentally, focusing on the film formation, film thickness and residence time distribution. CFD models were used to investigate the pyrolysis reaction and the separation of carbon. In a falling film reactor (L = 3 m, ⌀ = 26 mm), high conversions of > 90 % were obtained at 1600 K. Co-current operation was identified as advantageous and more than 75 % of the carbon could be separated via the liquid film. The rotating film reactor was shorter (1.7 m) and wider (. = 44 mm). Conversions > 83 % were achieved in the same formal reaction volume. Carbon separation was improved by rotating the reactor. From particle sizes of 5 µm, almost all the carbon was separated via the film.
In addition to the film reactors, formation and removal of carbon in tubular reactors were studied. Kinetic studies showed that carbon accumulating in the reactor accelerates the reaction. Using a model of gas-phase and surface reaction, the effects could be well described. Finally, the carbon aggregates were removed mechanically with a pressing device. The force required for removal increases with the amount of carbon in the reactor and depends on the reactor material.2023-01-01T00:00:00ZNovel adsorptive reactor configurations: fundamental conceptualisation for design and operationHussainy, Mamoonhttp://hdl.handle.net/2003/422072023-11-30T23:13:38Z2023-01-01T00:00:00ZTitle: Novel adsorptive reactor configurations: fundamental conceptualisation for design and operation

Abstract: There has been considerable interest in recent years in “intensified processes” that allow for the substantial amelioration of chemical processes in terms of equipment dimensions, costs, and safety. The integration of an additional separative functionality into chemical reactors can be used to manipulate the concentration and temperature profiles and thus dramatically enhance reactor performance. The resultant improvements in conversion and selectivity can, in turn, simplify or even eliminate the downstream processing necessary. Adsorptive reactors, in which adsorptive and reactive functionalities are combined, represent a promising example of the bifunctionality in industrial chemical reactors.
In this research work, intensive yet comprehensive multiscale and multidimensional modelling and simulation studies have been conducted dealing systematically with the relations of the available degrees of freedom to one another and to the performance of adsorptive fixed bed reactors. The goal was to obtain know-how-oriented strategies to maximise the performance of adsorptive reactors. Amongst the several degrees of freedom available in design and operation of adsorptive reactors, it was found that the spatial distribution of the adsorptive and catalytic functionalities at the reactor level (macrostructuring) and the temperature profiling over the reactor length have been shown to be decisive factors for maximising adsorptive reactor performance.
Considering the industrially-relevant Claus and Deacon reactions as test cases, two novel designs have been proposed, the multilevel isothermal and the central isothermal sandwich designs, by which a multi-fold performance improvement compared to the corresponding isothermal and adiabatic simple uniform structure adsorptive reactor designs could be attained even with incorporating the regeneration process necessary, where the cyclic steady state was calculated based on the direct substitution method. The improvements in space time yields obtained by the foresaid novel designs were respectively 700% and 650% for Claus reaction and 35-fold and 18.5-fold for Deacon reaction. The overall feasibility of these novel designs can be envisaged in the light of the considerable cost reduction, which compensate for the extra costs required for the technical realisation of the proposed designs, achieved by avoiding the expensive tail-gas treatment processes in case of Claus reaction or by simplified downstream processing in case of Deacon reaction.; In den letzten Jahren hat es ein beträchtliches Interesse an "intensivierten Prozessen" gegeben, die es ermöglichen, chemische Prozesse in Bezug auf Anlagengröße, Kosten und Sicherheit erheblich zu verbessern.

Abstract: The chemical industry in Europe is transforming. Diversifying raw materials, an increased circular economy and a growing market of specialty chemicals require flexible and fast process development. Small-scale continuous reactors can contribute to these requirements.
In particular, triphasic gas-liquid-liquid slug flows can perform complex multiphase systems at a laboratory scale. This work investigates strategies to counteract a gas shortage in gas-consuming reactions in such capillaries. On the one hand, gas permeation through the polymer capillary is investigated, and its influence on an existing slug flow is studied. On the other hand, individual gas bubbles are integrated into the slug flow using valves and an electrolysis cell. Both methods preserve the advantageous slug flow - however, they have advantages and disadvantages depending on the reaction applied. Moreover, they can be used in a scale-up of capillary reactors, contrary to established methods.
For success in scale-up, inexpensive and robust sensors are necessary in addition to gas-feeding methods. For this purpose, non-invasive optoelectric sensors are developed for triphasic slug flows, which can detect the flow (velocity, phase ratios, segment lengths), but also determine local concentrations. Both light refraction and light absorption are exploited. Concentration sensors are used to study the homogeneously catalyzed hydrogenation of a dye to a colorless form. A change in hydrodynamic parameters had only minor effects compared to chemical parameters. However, the reaction was significantly intensified compared to a stirred tank reactor.
Finally, selective fat hydrogenation in a triphasic slug flow is investigated. A suitable solvent selection can counteract unfavorable solid formation.

Abstract: Global warming is posing a threat to our environment and our life. The major cause of global warming is the increase global atmospheric CO2 concentration from 280 ppm in the preindus-trial era to 415 ppm in 2020. The heavy reliance on fossil fuels as the primary energy sources results in globally over 30 Gt/year of energy-related CO2 emissions in this decade. To address the global issues of the threat of climate change, a common goal for limiting global warming was set in the Paris Agreement by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) in 2015, which aims to restrict the global average increase in temperature to 1.5-2 °C by the end of this century. Moreover, the IPCC 2018 special Report restates the consensus of reducing the global net greenhouse gas emissions to zero by 2050. This indicates that a transition to net-zero CO2 emissions by 2050 is imperative.
There are three main pathways for achieving the target of net-zero CO2 emissions. The first pathway is using renewable energy instead of fossil fuels as primary energy to reduce the sources of CO2 emissions. The second pathway is scaling up of carbon dioxide removal tech-nologies, namely the carbon capture and storage (CCS) technologies to lower current CO2 emis-sion rates from large stationary sources. The last pathway is applying the negative emissions technologies (NETs) to recapture the carbon dioxide previously released due to human activi-ties in the atmosphere.
Among all the carbon dioxide removal (CDR) technologies, direct air capture (DAC) of CO2 with chemicals is the most promising NET with advantages such as a low demand of land and water use, high flexibility for location choosing, high technical feasibility, high scalability, and low risk. DAC faces the only significant challenge of decreasing its high costs.
An attractive alternative to circumvent the intensive energy requirements for the regeneration of the adsorbents in the DAC is the coupling of the endothermic DAC process with an exother-mic process such as Power to Gas (Methane), i.e. the conversion of surplus renewable energy into chemical energy in the form of gas. The exothermic Sabatier reaction for the methanation of CO2 with renewable hydrogen is able to supply the heat to the DAC and thus reduce the cost for recapturing CO2 from ambient air.
Based on this idea, a concept of an energetic integrated DAC-PtG system has been introduced in this work. The energetic integrated processes have been modeled and simulated with the software Aspen Custom Modeler® (ACM). The heat recovery system has been optimized by using a Pinch analysis. A systematic analysis of the energy demand and an economic evaluation have been made in order to evaluate the potential value of this concepts.
Besides the energetic analysis of the integrated DAC-PtG system, the experimental studies for the DAC and methanation process were carried out separately in the laboratory. Lewatit® VP OC1065 has been selected from the adsorbent screening tests as the most suitable adsorbent for the DAC process. In order to identify its thermodynamic and kinetic performances during the ad- and desorption process, the adsorbent Lewatit® VP OC1065 has been examined in a mon-olithic and a fixed-bed adsorber. The methanation of CO2 has also been investigated with a parameter study using the method of statistical test planning on the 5 wt.% Ru/Al2O3 catalyst in an isothermal fixed-bed reactor.
The results of this work present the possibility to integrate a DAC facility with a PtG device applying heat exchange to reduce the price of CO2 recovery from ambient air and to enhance the energy efficiency.2022-01-01T00:00:00ZKreuz-Gegenstrom-Verschaltung zum Numbering-up der Pfropfenströmung zu ExtraktionszweckenSchwarz, Christian AndreasMendelawi, MehdyAgar, David W.http://hdl.handle.net/2003/409672022-06-20T22:12:53Z2021-10-13T00:00:00ZTitle: Kreuz-Gegenstrom-Verschaltung zum Numbering-up der Pfropfenströmung zu Extraktionszwecken

Experimente belegen die prinzipielle Realisierbarkeit der Fluiddynamik.; In microprocess engineering miniaturization limits the maximal throughput of m-mixer-settler units. Therefore, an increased productivity can only be achieved by parallelization of multiple units. A single thread of n countercurrent arranged extraction units already has a need of n + 1 costly pumps, a parallelization of m threads requires m(n + 1) pumps. An arrangement concept is presented to reduce the necessary number of pumps to 2m+ n – 1. The concept is discussed theoretically. Abstract: Catalytic oxidation of sustainable raw materials like unsaturated fats and oils, or fatty acids and their esters, lead to biobased, high-value products. Starting from technical grade methyl oleate, hydrogen peroxide as a green oxidant produces only water as by-product. A commercially available, cheap water-soluble tungsten catalyst is combined with Aliquat® 336 as a phase-transfer agent in solvent-free reaction conditions. In this study, we first report the transfer of this well-known batch system into continuous mode. The space–time yield is improved from 0.08 kg/L.h in batch to 1.29 kg/L.h in flow mode. The improved mass transfer and reduced back mixing of the biphasic liquid–liquid slug flow allows for selectivity control depending on physical parameters of slug flow namely volumetric phase ratio, volumetric flow rate, and slug length. Even though the product, methyl 9,10-epoxystearate is obtained at a maximum selectivity of only 58% in flow mode, higher space time yield combined with possible reactant recycling in flow mode offers a promising avenue of research. This work analyses the use of slug flow parameters as tools for controlling selectivity towards oxidation products of methyl oleate.2021-10-05T00:00:00ZCFD modeling of reactor concepts to avoid carbon deposition in pyrolysis reactionsBecker, TobiasKeuchel, FlorianAgar, David W.http://hdl.handle.net/2003/408752022-04-22T22:13:19Z2021-02-23T00:00:00ZTitle: CFD modeling of reactor concepts to avoid carbon deposition in pyrolysis reactions

Abstract: Methane pyrolysis in an externally heated tubular reactor inevitably ends with clogging of the reactor. Thin molten metal wall films protect the walls from carbon depositions. A falling film reactor and a rotating film reactor are investigated by CFD simulation. The results show the considerable advantages of a rotating film reactor compared to the vertical film reactor. An alternative route for carbon production from methane is the implementation of an exothermic chlorination reaction. The tubular reactor concept involves the inflow of inert gas at the reactant inlet and through porous walls to ensure that the reaction takes place in the center, thus, largely reducing carbon deposits.2021-02-23T00:00:00ZAusarbeitung der Pfropfenströmung zum effektiven Extraktionswerkzeug in der MikroverfahrenstechnikSchwarz, Christian Andreashttp://hdl.handle.net/2003/408662022-04-20T22:13:52Z2021-01-01T00:00:00ZTitle: Ausarbeitung der Pfropfenströmung zum effektiven Extraktionswerkzeug in der Mikroverfahrenstechnik
Authors: Schwarz, Christian Andreas
Abstract: Der allgemeine Trend zur Prozessintensivierung lässt die Mikroverfahrenstechnik
kleinen Dimensionen experimentell plausibilisiert.
werden soll.; The overall trend for process intensification leads to an increased focus on micro
process engineering due to the enhanced heat and mass transfer. Especially transfer
limited processes like extraction can massively benefit from miniaturization.
The scope of this work was to extend the liquid-liquid slug flow as an extraction
tool. Therefore, elimination of existing disadvantages of slug flow were focused.
Incomplete model accuracy for prediction of clean phase splitting and huge parallelization
effort count to these drawbacks. Beside these developments slug flow was
characterized in application areas that are still challenging for typical extraction
devices.
Phase split phenomena were investigated numerically. As main part of this work
a numerical method was developed that exhibits extremely low parasitic currents.
The simulations show significant instationary acceleration effects of the fluids in
the surrounding piping. As a result other phase splitting methods were investigated
experimentally that are able to limit those effects to the inner device volume.
The reduction of pressure drop and the removal of membranes allowed the use of
ferrofluids as disperse phase. These ferrofluidic slugs were detectable for monitoring
reasons by inductors that may be used as actuators as well in following studies.
Parallel to these investigations the liquid-liquid slug flow was evaluated during
extraction form highly viscous media. Typical extraction devices are still challenged
by small density differences, high surface tensions or high viscosities due to inhibited
counter-current flow or reduced mass transfer. To parallelize slug flow extraction
units under these circumstances a new parallelization concept was developed and
showed plausible results.
Overall, slug flow is evaluated to be not competitive to state of the art extraction
devices for common extraction tasks. Instead slug flow turned out to be a highly
recommended tool for extractions incorporating small density differences, big surface
tensions or high viscosities.2021-01-01T00:00:00ZIntegrated adsorber concepts for use in direct air capture and power-to-gas applicationsDrechsler, Carstenhttp://hdl.handle.net/2003/407402022-02-25T23:12:57Z2021-01-01T00:00:00ZTitle: Integrated adsorber concepts for use in direct air capture and power-to-gas applications

In diesem Zusammenhang zeigen durchgeführte
welche aus atmosphärischer Luft gewonnen werden.; The application of technological concepts for removal of the greenhouse gas carbon
dioxide (CO2) from the atmosphere (direct air capture, DAC ) is considered to be one
of the most promising approaches to mitigate the anthropogenic greenhouse effect. But
its large-scale application is hampered by several intrinsic limitations. These result in
particular from the highly diluted state of CO2 in the atmosphere and can lead to an
impedingly high CO2-specific energy demand of the capture process.
In-depth modeling and simulation show that the heat integration strategies developed
in this work and their technical realization within novel belt (MBtA) and moving bed adsorber (MBdA) concepts allow for a significant reduction of the CO2-specific heat demand
of thermal sorbent regeneration concepts. However, the problem of water co-adsorption
on DAC sorbents, which is confirmed by experimental studies within the framework of
this contribution, can lead to an additional, significant CO2-specific heat demand within
the sorbent regeneration cycle. Recovery of the latent heat stored in the desorbed water
vapor by mechanical vapor compression (MVR) is identified as a promising engineering
approach to reduce the energy penalty attributed to H2O co-adsorption.
The concepts developed are integrated as heat-efficient CO2 sources within a power-to-gas (PtG) process. Detailed modeling and pinch analysis reveal that a highly resource efficient DAC-PtG process can be realized by targeted utilization of the synergies within
the process structure. Autothermal production of methane solely based on renewable
energy supply and on the educts carbon dioxide and water, captured from ambient air,

Authors: Hellmann, David; Oliveira-Goncalves, Ícaro de; Agar, David W.
Abstract: Triphasic gas-liquid-liquid slug flow systems have great application potential in flow chemistry and are normally generated with a double T-junction where the continuous phase and one disperse phase form a two-phase flow and the second disperse phase is added at the second junction. This design is limited to high disperse phase ratios when a regular and uniform flow is desired. The use of coaxial contactors allows overcoming most of these restrictions. The slug generation, stability, and regularity of the generated triphasic flow were experimentally characterized.2020-04-06T00:00:00ZCO2-free energy from natural gas via BrOx cycleGonzález Rebordinos, Jesúshttp://hdl.handle.net/2003/401542021-04-15T22:12:52Z2020-01-01T00:00:00ZTitle: CO2-free energy from natural gas via BrOx cycle
Authors: González Rebordinos, Jesús
Abstract: In the present work a novel process for energy generation from natural gas without concomitant CO2 emissions, namely the Bromination-Oxidation (BrOx) cycle, is proposed and studied. This process consists of two exothermic reactions and an internal brominere cycle. Methane and bromine react in the first reaction step to yield solid carbon, that is separated by means of a cyclone or a filter, and hydrogen bromide. The latter is oxidised with oxygen in a second reactor yielding water and bromine. Bromine is separated and recycled to the first reaction step so that the energy is released in the process with solid carbon and water as only by-products.
Firstly, the thermodynamics of the process were studied to assess its feasibility and simulations on both reaction steps in plug flow reactors were carried out in order to estimate suitable reaction conditions. A bench-scale plant was constructed to study experimentally methane bromination and determine temperatures and residence times that lead to complete reaction and carbon formation. Additionally, the carbon produced was characterised and its bromine content quantitatively determined.
During methane bromination carbon deposition occurs, leading to inefficient operation. Two reactor concepts were proposed in this work, a vortex reactor that avoids deposition via the hydrodynamics of the system, and a sacrificial wall reactor in which deposition is not avoided but reactor cleaning is facilitated by means of a sacrificial coating on the inner walls. CFD simulation and optimisation of the vortex reactor was performed while sacrificial walls were studied experimentally.
A catalyst for the second reaction step, hydrogen bromide oxidation, was synthesised and characterised, and experiments on both thermal and catalytic oxidation were carried out. Moreover, both operation modes were simulated and modelling was used to propose an optimal strategy for this reaction step.
Finally, the flowsheeting of the BrOx cycle, including a preliminary economical analysis of the process, was performed and convenient separation units and operation parameters were selected based on the aforementioned data and simulation result.2020-01-01T00:00:00ZPhotoelectric sensor for fast and low-priced determination of bi- and triphasic segmented slug flow parametersVietinghoff, Niclas vonLungrin, WaldemarSchulzke, RaphaelTilly, JonasAgar, David W.http://hdl.handle.net/2003/398672020-12-12T02:40:57Z2020-12-04T00:00:00ZTitle: Photoelectric sensor for fast and low-priced determination of bi- and triphasic segmented slug flow parameters
Authors: Vietinghoff, Niclas von; Lungrin, Waldemar; Schulzke, Raphael; Tilly, Jonas; Agar, David W.
Abstract: Applying multiphase systems in microreactors leads to an intensification of heat and mass transport. Critical aspects of the well-studied segmented slug-flow, such as bubble generation and pump control, can be automated, provided a robust sensor for the reliable determination of velocity, phase lengths, and phase ratio(s) is available. In this work, a fast and low-priced sensor is presented, based on two optical transmission sensors detecting flow characteristics noninvasively together with a microcontroller. The resulting signal is mainly due to refraction of the bubble-specific geometries as shown by a simulation of light paths. The high performance of the processing procedure, utilizing the derivative of the signal, is demonstrated for a bi- and triphasic slug flow. The error of <5% is entirely reasonable for the purpose envisaged. The sensor presented is very fast, robust, and inexpensive, thus enhancing the attractiveness of parallelized capillary reactors for industrial applications.2020-12-04T00:00:00ZModeling of slug velocity and pressure drop in gas‐liquid‐liquid slug flowHellmann, DavidAgar, David W.http://hdl.handle.net/2003/390862020-04-09T01:40:59Z2019-07-15T00:00:00ZTitle: Modeling of slug velocity and pressure drop in gas‐liquid‐liquid slug flow
Authors: Hellmann, David; Agar, David W.
Abstract: Gas‐liquid‐liquid slug flow in a capillary reactor is a promising new concept that allows one to incorporate gas‐liquid reaction, liquid‐liquid extraction, and facile catalyst separation in a single unit. In order to assess the performance of a gas‐liquid‐liquid slug flow reactor, it is necessary to predict the slug velocity and pressure drop to ascertain residence times and reaction rates. New empirical models for velocity and pressure drop were developed based on existing models for two‐phase gas‐liquid and liquid‐liquid slug flows, and these were validated experimentally.2019-07-15T00:00:00ZVergleich Hoch-Wärmeintegrierter Adsorberkonzepte für eine Anwendung in Direct Air Capture VerfahrenDrechsler, CarstenAgar, David W.http://hdl.handle.net/2003/390342020-03-06T02:40:51Z2019-11-28T00:00:00ZTitle: Vergleich Hoch-Wärmeintegrierter Adsorberkonzepte für eine Anwendung in Direct Air Capture Verfahren

Authors: Munera Parra, Alejandro Augusto
Abstract: In this work, two reactions are studied as a mean to deal with the current CO2 conundrum.
The first reaction is the high-temperature pyrolysis of methane. This reaction serves
as a way to avoid the stoichiometric production of CO2 when producing hydrogen,
which could either be used for energy production or as a base chemical. The second
reaction is the reverse Water-Gas Shift (rWGS) reaction. By means of this reaction,
CO2 that is unavoidably produced and has been captured, can be activated to the
more reactive CO and subsequently mixed with hydrogen to produce syngas.
For the methane pyrolysis, liquid- and solid-based reactors are studied. The former
are reactor concepts based on the use of molten media. Capillary, falling-film and
rotating reactors are introduced as alternatives to carry out the pyrolysis with efficient
heat transfer and to avoid carbon deposition. Solid-based reactors, in the form of
moving-bed, are studied from a theoretical perspective. First the operation stability
of the reactor is investigated by means of bifurcation analysis, and then several heat
input strategies are modeled and optimized to determine solutions in the short, mid
and long-term.
For the rWGS, multifunctional adsorptive reactors are studied as a workaround to
the problem of low equilibrium conversion, as well as heat input for more attractive
low-temperature rWGS, as compared to the industrially common high-temperature
counterpart. Two concepts are investigated; a fixed-bed and a moving-bed reactor.
Their potential for optimization is determined, and a comparison between the concepts
Authors: Gelhausen, Marius Gerrit
sondern findet im entscheidenden Maße am hinteren Ende des wässrigen Pfropfens statt.; The scope of this work is to explore novel reaction pathways for liquid-liquid slug flow in
capillary micro-contactors. Hence, the advantageous characteristics of slug flow are applied to
highly viscous ionic liquids, a counter-current arrangement for the nitration of benzene, and a
transfer hydrogenation with suspended heterogeneous catalyst.
Liquid-liquid slug flows feature highly regular segments with internal recirculation motion,
which increases mass transfer across phase boundaries.
Ionic liquids selected from the groups of [EMIM][Alkyl Sulfate] and [Alkyl-3-methylimidazolium][
NTf2] virtually exhibit stable slug flow with cyclohexane in PTFE-capillaries.
It depends on viscosity, phase ratio, and capillary diameter and can be described by Capillary
number and Weber number. Furthermore, the character of inner circulatory flow is revealed.
For the nitration of benzene the concentration profile is influenced by a two-stage countercurrent
and cross flow arrangement of capillary micro-contactors, each comprising of a slug
flow with consecutive continuous phase separation. By adapting the temperature in each stage
both conversion and selectivity may be increased.
Suspended catalyst particles in two phase slug flow could be an alternative technique for
using heterogeneous catalysts in micro-reactors. The hydrodynamic and particle behaviour in
aqueous-toluene slug flow was analysed using particles of typical catalyst support materials.
Suspended aluminium oxide and silicon dioxide particles follow the internal circulation
streamlines almost exactly, while carbon-based particles accumulate at the liquid-liquid
interface and form a contiguous cap around the rear end of the dispersed slug.
The principle of suspension catalysis in slug flow is demonstrated experimentally for the
heterogeneous catalytic transfer hydrogenation of m-nitrotoluene. The conversion is
determined by the accessible amount of catalyst and the mass transport. The latter can be
increased at higher flow velocities and by using a glass capillary which is wetted by the
aqueous phase. Furthermore, the posterior zone of the dispersed slug exhibits the most active
Da selbst schnelle Reaktionen auf 10 - 100 s Skala in der Suspensionspfropfenströmung rein mikrokinetisch kontrolliert sind, erschließt dieses Mikroreaktorkonzept Bereiche intensivierter Reaktionsführung, die mit konventionellen Laborapparaten oder konventioneller Suspensionskatalyse nicht möglich sind.; Appreciable advances in microtechnology have been made over the last 20 years, driven by trends towards flexible production and shorter times-to-market. However, microfluidic technologies with solid particles have been neglected, due to the risk of clogging, empirical design of solid processing and the stochastic phenomena involved. This has largely excluded suspension catalysis from microfluidic applications, despite the unique features offered by liquid/liquid slug flow. Addition of a second liquid as catalyst carrier permits facile recovery of particles by liquid/liquid phase separation and use of smaller particles providing reduced film transport limitations.
The widespread reservations have been proven unfounded, with employing a dosing unit prototype, adopting heuristics for safe particle handling in microchannels and with the help of CFD simulations. Particles of 1 - 160 μm at concentrations of up to 36 wt.-% were suspended successfully in μ-channels, indicating a wide operating window.
Experimental, fluorescence-microscopic studies on fluid- and particle dynamics verified the complexity of internal circulation and particle segregation. Surprisingly, particles were found to segregate in the rear cap not only at low flow rates due to gravity, but also at elevated velocities, as a consequence of centrifugal and Saffman force.
The impact of segregation on liquid/solid mass transfer has been quantified by means of ion exchange and numerical modelling. According to these findings, segregation results in unacceptable slow mass transfer. But higher mass transfer rates are accessible either by control of particle motion, resuspension measures like periodic wettability inversion or reduced particle diameter.
The interaction of overall mass transfer and reaction has finally been elucidated with experimental and numerical analysis of a biphasic ester hydrolysis. Even fast reactions over 10 - 100 s were proven purely microkinetically controlled.
Hence suspension slug flow catalysis is a capable concept with intensified mass transfer and useful as laboratory tool following the “batch-to-conti” paradigm.2015-01-01T00:00:00ZStudy on CO2 capture using thermomorphic biphasic solvents with energy efficient regenerationZhang, Jiafeihttp://hdl.handle.net/2003/339182015-08-12T20:01:48Z2014-01-01T00:00:00ZTitle: Study on CO2 capture using thermomorphic biphasic solvents with energy efficient regeneration
