In this thesis, a subgrid identification procedure for medium voltage grids is developed. The main feature is the adaptive implementation and scaling in local substations by using virtualization solutions and machine learning algorithms. Subgrids describe supply structures that are physically isolated from the interconnected grid, unspecified in their size and continue to operate unintentionally due to disturbances. The modeling of the test environment and the evaluation of the functionality of the subgrid identification procedure is carried out by dynamic simulations in MATLAB Simulink© as well as by a Hardware-in-the-Loop simulation using a real-time simulator.

In Anlehnung
The developments in the context of the energy transition are leading to a transformation
of the electrical energy system. In the process, new challenges and questions arise that
are being investigated in research activities. These investigations often require analyses
in electricity grids, which in turn require grid models. Good scientific practice requires
transparency and comparability, which can be supported by benchmark grid models. This
thesis is dedicated to the process of modeling such benchmark grid models. First, the term
benchmarking is sharpened in the context of grid analyses in electric power systems, as no
fixed definition is available. In addition, parameters for the characterisation of electrical
grids are analysed, grouped and prioritised. Based on real grid planning processes, it
is described how benchmark grid models can be generated synthetically and based on
publicly available data. Finally, based on these findings, it is explained how the modelling
of the low-voltage network models in the publicly so-called SimBench dataset was carried
out. For this purpose, the data set is analysed and evaluated, and the potential and
limitations of the data are discussed.

Title: Modulare Smart-Grid-Automatisierungsarchitektur mit integriertem Konfigurationsprozess auf Basis der IEC 61850-6

Grid integration of variable renewable energies in Ghana: assessment of the impact on system stability

Title: Grid integration of variable renewable energies in Ghana: assessment of the impact on system stability
Authors: Asmah, Marilyn Winifred
Abstract: This research analyses the impact of renewable energies (RE) generation in Ghana’s national interconnected transmission system (NITS) and how its stability is affected. Integrating RE, particularly solar and wind in Ghana’s power system has been discussed at the national level with the intention to diversify the energy mix and reduce the dependency on thermal energy. RE integration introduces operational and infrastructural challenges in Ghana’s network, to which novel measures are required. Using the DIgSILENT PowerFactory simulation tool and MATLAB, simulation scenarios are created to capture diverse network conditions including different RE penetration levels, load demand and infrastructural expansion for three separate years. The ‘optimum’ penetration level of RE in the NITS considering voltage and loading limits is also identified using optimization techniques. The simulation results show that the target scenario is the most prone to both static and dynamic voltage instability. The transient stability analysis however reveals the post-target scenario to be unstable. Furthermore, methods of optimization are used to determine the reactive power deficient nodes in the NITS, which serve as the basis for the stability enhancement measures. The simulations and analysis additionally indicate that implementing the proposed measures indeed enhances the stability of the NITS. Finally, this research shows that RE integration is ‘technically’ feasible in Ghana if the required network reinforcements and operational changes are accordingly considered.

Title: Manifold turnpikes, trims, and symmetries
Authors: Faulwasser, Timm; Flaßkamp, Kathrin; Ober-Blöbaum, Sina; Schaller, Manuel; Worthmann, Karl
Abstract: Classical turnpikes correspond to optimal steady states which are attractors of infinite-horizon optimal control problems. In this paper, motivated by mechanical systems with symmetries, we generalize this concept to manifold turnpikes. Specifically, the necessary optimality conditions projected onto a symmetry-induced manifold coincide with those of a reduced-order problem defined on the manifold under certain conditions. We also propose sufficient conditions for the existence of manifold turnpikes based on a tailored notion of dissipativity with respect to manifolds. Furthermore, we show how the classical Legendre transformation between Euler–Lagrange and Hamilton formalisms can be extended to the adjoint variables. Finally, we draw upon the Kepler problem to illustrate our findings.

Title: Operation strategies of battery energy storage systems for preventive and curative congestion management in transmission grids
Authors: Lindner, Martin; Peper, Jan; Offermann, Nils; Biele, Charlotte; Teodosic, Milijana; Pohl, Oliver; Menne, Julian; Häger, Ulf
Abstract: Anticipating and relieving congestions is an ongoing challenge for transmission system operators. Distributed grid-scale battery energy storage systems enable operators to shift power flows and remedy congestion through virtual power lines and grid boosters. This paper includes battery energy storage systems in a combined preventive and curative congestion management optimization. First, it analyzes the impact of the two operational strategies in a case study of the German transmission grid. Furthermore, it outlines curative ad-hoc measures to overcome uncertainties during operational planning and real-time operation. The simulation results indicate that battery energy storage systems further increase the use of curative measures and reduce congestion management costs.

Virtual inertia for suppressing voltage oscillations and stability mechanisms in DC microgrids
http://hdl.handle.net/2003/41192
Title: Virtual inertia for suppressing voltage oscillations and stability mechanisms in DC microgrids
Authors: Lin, Gang
Abstract: Renewable energy sources (RES) are gradually penetrating power systems through power electronic converters (PECs), which greatly change the structure and operation characteristics of traditional power systems. The maturation of PECs has also laid a technical foundation for the development of DC microgrids (DC-MGs). The advantages of DC-MGs over AC systems make them an important access target for RES. Due to the multi-timescale characteristics and fast response of power electronics, the dynamic coupling of PEC control systems and the transient interaction between the PEC and the passive network are inevitable, which threatens the stable operation of DC-MGs. Therefore, this dissertation focuses on the study of stabilization control methods, the low-frequency oscillation (LFO) mechanism analysis of DC-MGs and the state-of-charge (SoC) imbalance problem of multi-parallel energy storage systems (ESS).
Firstly, a virtual inertia and damping control (VIDC) strategy is proposed to enable bidirectional DC converters (BiCs) to damp voltage oscillations by using the energy stored in ESS to emulate inertia without modifications to system hardware. Both the inertia part and the damping part are modeled in the VIDC controller by analogy with DC machines. Simulation results verify that the proposed VIDC can improve the dynamic characteristics and stability in islanded DC-MG. Then, inertia droop control (IDC) strategies are proposed for BiC of ESS based on the comparison between conventional droop control and VIDC. A feedback analytical method is presented to comprehend stability mechanisms from multi-viewpoints and observe the interaction between variables intuitively. A hardware in the loop (HIL) experiment verifies that IDC can simplify the control structure of VIDC in the promise of ensuring similar control performances. Subsequently, a multi-timescale impedance model is established to clarify the control principle of VIDC and the LFO mechanisms of VIDC-controlled DC-MG. Control loops of different timescales are visualized as independent loop virtual impedances (LVIs) to form an impedance circuit. The instability factors are revealed and a dynamic stability enhancement method is proposed to compensate for the negative damping caused by VIDC and CPL. Experimental results have validated the LFO mechanism analysis and stability enhancement method. Finally, an inertia-emulation-based cooperative control strategy for multi-parallel ESS is proposed to address the SoC imbalance and voltage deviation problem in steady-state operation and the voltage stability problem. The contradiction between SoC balancing speed and maintaining system stability is solved by a redefined SoC-based droop resistance function. HIL experiments prove that the proposed control performs better dynamics and static characteristics without modifying the hardware and can balance the SoC in both charge and discharge modes.

An inertia-emulation-based cooperative control strategy and parameters design for multi-parallel energy storage system in islanded DC microgrids

Title: An inertia-emulation-based cooperative control strategy and parameters design for multi-parallel energy storage system in islanded DC microgrids
Authors: Lin, Gang; Liu, Jiayan; Zhou, Yang; Li, Yong; Rehtanz, Christian; Wang, Shaoyang; Wang, Pengcheng; Zuo, Wei
Abstract: This paper proposes an inertia-emulation-based cooperative control strategy for the multi-parallel energy storage system (ESS) to meet the requirements of state-of-charge (SoC) balance, inertia enhancement and zero-steady-state voltage deviation. The inertia emulation loop (IEL) is constructed by analogy with DC motors to dampen voltage oscillation, while the secondary voltage recovery loop is derived from the circuit equivalence of an inductor to indicate the system stiffness. Moreover, to equalize SoCs of energy storage units (ESUs) dynamically, a SoC self-balance algorithm is developed. The redefined SoC mismatch degree and balance speed adjustment factor k are introduced into the droop resistance, adjusting the SoC self-balance rate and eliminating the SoC deviation among ESUs. The dynamic performance of the SoC self-balance algorithm is analyzed and the small signal model of the DC microgrid (DC-MG) with proposed strategy is established. Based on eigenvalue analysis and step response, the system stability is assessed, and the influence of control parameters on transient characteristics and stability margin is investigated. Considering power constraint, voltage deviation constraint and dynamic stability constraint, the optimal design method of k is given. Finally, simulation and experiment verify that the proposed control, without modifying hardware, performs better dynamic and static characteristics and can equalize SoC among ESUs in charge and discharge mode.

Stufenlose Strangspannungsregelung in der Niederspannung

Title: Stufenlose Strangspannungsregelung in der Niederspannung
Authors: Holt, Mara

Abstract: The drastic increase in distributed energy resources (DERs) leads to challenges in the operation of distribution systems worldwide. While several solutions for grid monitoring and control are available on the market and in literature, this research is the first of its kind aiming to supervise the grid by providing a modular configurable unified hardware and software architecture. The control algorithms are configured using data models according to IEC 61850-7-3 and IEC 61850-7-4. The novel system architecture is a portable, modular and flexible architecture that aggregates smart grid control functions onto a standardised hardware platform, emphasising the need for hardware independence. The central controller contains several smart grid control functions and the various field devices are distributed across the distribution grid. This paper deals with the simulation of different real-world distribution grids on the Real-Time Simulator (RTS) and experimental verification of the control algorithms. Smart grid control functions such as Coordinated Voltage Control (CVC) and Optimal Power Flow (OPF) are experimentally verified on a German grid. The grid dynamics are compared when the central controller executes the CVC against the OPF implementations. The experimental results, advantages and challenges of each control are presented here. The results also showed the variation in grid behaviour when the control parameters were varied. The paper also shows that the algorithm and the choice of the control parameters depend upon the distribution grid's complexity and the system operator's individual needs. The results illustrate the potential of such a universal distribution automation solution for system operators worldwide.

Abstract: Thematischer Schwerpunkt dieser Arbeit ist die Untersuchung von Solardachkatastern
In diesem
hinterfragen.

Title: Research on economic planning and operation of electric vehicle charging stations
Authors: Liu, Jiayan
Abstract: Appropriately planning and scheduling strategies can improve the enthusiasm of Electric vehicles (EVs), reduce charging losses, and support the power grid system. Thus, this dissertation studies the planning and operating of the EV charging station. First, an EV charging station planning strategy considering the overall social cost is proposed. Then, to reduce the charging cost and guarantee the charging demand, an optimal charging scheduling method is proposed. Additionally, by considering the uncertainty of charging demand, a data-driven intelligent EV charging scheduling algorithm is proposed. Finally, a collaborative optimal routing and scheduling method is proposed.

Abstract: This note discusses the interplay between dissipativity and the asymptotics of continuous-time infinite-horizon optimal control problems. We focus on the results on convergence of optimal primal solutions derived in [6]. Moreover, we present a result on the attractivity of the infinite-horizon optimal adjoint trajectories, which is closely related to transversality conditions for infinite-horizon optimal control problems. Toward optimal operation of multienergy home-microgrids for power balancing in distribution networks: a model predictive control approach
http://hdl.handle.net/2003/40756
Title: Toward optimal operation of multienergy home-microgrids for power balancing in distribution networks: a model predictive control approach
Authors: Hidalgo Rodríguez, Diego I.
Abstract: The energy policy objectives of the German government regarding renewable energy sources and energy efficiency will lead to a significantly increase in the share of photovoltaics, storage systems, CHP plants, and heat pumps, especially at the distribution grid level. In the future, inside a household, such systems must be coordinated in such a way that they can respond to variable network conditions as a single flexible unit. This dissertation defines home-microgrid as a residential building with integrated distributed energy resources, and follows a bottom-up approach, based on the cellular approach, which aims at improving local balancing in low-voltage grids by using the flexibilities of home-microgrids. For this purpose, the dissertation develops optimization-based strategies for the coordination of multienergy home-microgrids, focusing on the use of model predictive control. The main core of the work is the formulation of the underlying optimization problems and the investigation of coordination strategies for interconnected home-microgrids. In this context, the work presents the use of the dual decomposition and the alternating direction method of multipliers for hierarchical-distributed coordination strategies. Finally, this dissertation introduces a framework for the co-simulation of electrical networks with penetration of multienergy home-microgrids.

Analysis of instability causes in the bi-dc converter and enhancing its performance by improving the damping in the IDA-PBC control

Title: Analysis of instability causes in the bi-dc converter and enhancing its performance by improving the damping in the IDA-PBC control
Authors: Lin, Gang; Liu, Jiayan; Rehtanz, Christian; Li, Yong; Zuo, Wei; Wang, Pengcheng
Abstract: The poor damping of bidirectional dc (bi-dc) converter caused by constant power load makes power system prone to oscillation, and non-minimum phase characteristic also jeopardises voltage stability. To solve these challenges, the interconnection and damping assignment passivity-based control (IDA-PBC) is utilised to improve transient response. The influences of the right-half-plane (RHP) zero on the stability margin and controller design are illustrated by zero dynamics analysis. Then the port-controlled Hamiltonian modelling is used to obtain the IDA-PBC control law, which is suitable to the bi-dc converter and independent of the operation mode. The system dissipation property is modified, and thus the desired damping is injected to smooth the transient voltage. To remove the voltage error caused by RHP zero and adjust the damping ratio, an energy controller with an adjustment factor is introduced. Besides, a virtual circuit is established to explain the physical meaning of the control parameter, and the parameter design method is given. Passivity analysis assesses the controller performance. Simulation results are analysed and compared with other control strategies to test the proposed IDA-PBC strategy.

Network-adaptive and capacity-efficient electric vehicle charging site

Title: Network-adaptive and capacity-efficient electric vehicle charging site
Authors: Rauma, Kalle; Simolin, Toni; Järventausta, Pertti; Rautiainen, Antti; Rehtanz, Christian
Abstract: The adaptive charging algorithms of today divide the available charging capacity of a charging site between the electric vehicles without knowing how much current each vehicle draws in reality. Thus, they are not able to detect deviations between the current set point at the charging station and the real charging current. This leads to a situation where the charging capacity of the charging site is not used optimally. This paper presents an algorithm including a novel feature, Expected Characteristic Expectation and tested under realistic circumstances. It is demonstrated that the proposed algorithm enhances the adaptability of the charging site, increasing the efficiency of the used network capacity up to about 2 kWh per charging point per day in comparison with the previous benchmark algorithm. The algorithm is able to increase the average monetary benefits of the charging operators by up to around 5.8%, that is 0.6 € per charging point per day. No input, such as departure time, is required from the user. The proposed algorithm has been tested with real electric vehicles and charging stations and is compatible with the IEC 61851 charging standard. The charging algorithm is applicable in practice as it is described in this paper.

Title: Short-term load forecasting at electric vehicle charging sites using a multivariate multi-step long short-term memory
Authors: Unterluggauer, Tim; Rauma, Kalle; Järventausta, Pertti; Rehtanz, Christian
Abstract: This study assesses the performance of a multivariate multi-step charging load prediction approach based on the long short-term memory (LSTM) and commercial charging data. The major contribution of this study is to provide a comparison of load prediction between various types of charging sites. Real charging data from shopping centres, residential, public, and workplace charging sites are gathered. Altogether, the data consists of 50,504 charging events measured at 37 different charging sites in Finland between January 2019 and January 2020. A forecast of the aggregated charging load is performed in 15-min resolution for each type of charging site. The second contribution of the work is the extended short-term forecast horizon. A multi-step prediction of either four (i.e., one hour) or 96 (i.e., 24 h) time steps is carried out, enabling a comparison of both horizons. The findings reveal that all charging sites exhibit distinct charging characteristics, which affects the forecasting accuracy and suggests a differentiated analysis of the different charging categories. Furthermore, the results indicate that the forecasting accuracy strongly correlates with the forecast horizon. The 4-time step prediction yields considerably superior results compared with the 96-time step forecast.

Overcoming non-idealities in electric vehicle charging management

Title: Overcoming non-idealities in electric vehicle charging management
Authors: Rauma, Kalle; Simolin, Toni; Rautiainen, Antti; Järventausta, Pertti; Rehtanz, Christian
Abstract: The inconvenient nature of non-ideal charging characteristics is demonstrated from a power system point of view. A new adaptive charging algorithm that accounts for non-ideal charging characteristics is introduced. The proposed algorithm increases the local network capacity utilization rate and reduces charging times. The first unique element of the charging algorithm is exploitation of the measured charging currents instead of ideal or predefined values. The second novelty is the introduction of a short-term memory called expected charging currents. This makes the algorithm capable of adapting to the unique charging characteristics of each vehicle individually without the necessity to obtain any information from the vehicle or the user. The proposed algorithm caters to various non-idealities, such as phase unbalances or the offset between the current set point and the real charging current but is still relatively simple and computationally light. The algorithm is compatible with charging standard IEC 61851 and is validated under different test cases with commercial electric vehicles.

Title: Advanced laboratory testing of smart grid applications with power hardware-in-the-loop approach
Authors: Spina, Alfio
Abstract: Power system innovation promoted by the smart grid vision provides large opportunities for the development of a sustainable energy supply infrastructure. However, the increase in system complexity arises the need for innovative planning and operation paradigms to guarantee the optimal and secure grid management. Nonetheless, suitable testing approaches are also required to ensure reliability, safety and proper system integration of innovative smart grid solutions and technologies before deployment. In this work practical issues in the design and operation of advanced smart grid test infrastructures are addressed. Both aspects are analyzed with particular emphasis on test facilities including power hardware-in-the-loop (PHIL) systems. The minimal requirements along with an architectural classification of the elemental laboratory equipment are suggested for the suitable facility design and effective operation. A set of fundamental operational use-cases are formulated for the practical and straightforward applicability of advanced testing approaches especially based on PHIL technique. The assessed design and operational aspects are evaluated on an existing smart grid laboratory equipped with a PHIL system together with typical full-scale smart grid components. Particularly, a number of test-cases are performed to evaluate the major operational aspects with an existing PHIL system. Results show the potential and the actual implementation issues when performing PHIL tests in case of practical applications.

Authors: Albrecht, Marvin
In diesem Kontext müssen dezentrale Anlagen in Zukunft zwingend Systemdienstleistungen
Feldversuchs in einem deutschen Verteilnetz getestet wurden.; The increased integration of decentralized energy recourses in distribution grids and the shutdown
of conventional power plants are fundamentally changing existing grid structures. In this context,
these generation units must provide ancillary services in the future. Especially, the provision of
primary control power, in particular by battery storage systems, must be analysed. Furthermore,
to ensure that these generators, connected to the distribution grid, are not disconnected during
load shedding, innovative load shedding schemes must be defined. The present work investigates
to which extent inverter-based distributed systems can be controlled via existing communication
infrastructures, such as smart metering systems. Additionally, a selective load shedding scheme
which ensures optimal load shedding processes has been developed. Dynamic simulations are
used to investigate the effectiveness of the new defined concepts to support the grid frequency in
critical situations. As a completion, developed prototypes of a storage controller to ensure the provision
of decentralized control power of storages as well as an underfrequency relay have been tested
not only in laboratory experiments but also in field tests in a German distribution network.

Monitoring of power system dynamics using a hybrid state estimator

Title: Monitoring of power system dynamics using a hybrid state estimator
Authors: Ortiz, Gabriel
Abstract: Modern power systems are undergoing a transformation process where distributed energy re-sources together with complex load technologies are increasingly integrated. This, in addition to a sustained growth in electricity consumption and a lack of significant investment in trans-mission infrastructure, leads power systems to face with new stochastic operating behavior and dynamics and to operate under stressed conditions. Under such operating conditions, the occurrence of a potential disturbance may cause a partial or a total collapse. Therefore, in order to minimize the risk of collapses and their impact, new monitoring tools must be adopted, capable of providing the right conditions for dynamic wide-area monitoring.
The thesis presents a hybrid state estimator, that is a monitoring tool that combines fast synchronized phasor measurements with traditional measurements into a single scheme. It has the ability to estimate at high speed power system dynamics associated to slow and fast transient phenomena considering a reduced amount of phasor measurement units (PMUs). The developed scheme consists of two phases depending on the power system operating regime. In phase one the system is in stationary regime and bus voltages (magnitude and angle) together with related variables like power flows, current through lines, etc. are estimated by a static estimator at a low speed, which is determined by the supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) system. When a physical disturbance happens and the system is in transient regime phase two comes into operation. This time, two estimators work in sequence at high speed. First, a static state estimator is used to estimate bus voltages as soon as the synchronized phasor measurement set arrives. Then, a dynamic estimator is in charge of estimating dynamic states of all generators and motors in the system, even if the unit is not observed by a PMU. Full observability is re-stored through a novel data-mining based methodology, which defines, first, a PMU topology that allows monitoring the post-contingency bus voltage dynamics of the entire power system and, second, generates a number of bus voltage pseudo-measurements to extend the observability to the whole system.

The Smart Power Cell concept
http://hdl.handle.net/2003/40247
Title: The Smart Power Cell concept
Authors: Mayorga González, Daniel
Abstract: This dissertation describes a novel architecture and operational concept for a future electric power system. The architecture and operational concept were developed as a solution to the technical challenges which result from the ongoing decommissioning of conventional power plants and the mass scale integration of distributed and renewable energy sources. In particular, the architecture aims at ensuring the efficient, secure and stable operation of a future power system by enabling the coordinated operation of its distribution and transmission grids. To this, in the first part of the dissertation, the Smart Power Cell concept is introduced. A Smart Power Cell is a subsection of the distribution domain of a future power system which is supervised and controlled by an ICT-based monitoring and control system. A Smart Power Cell can be controlled to adapt its dynamic behaviour on demand an thus be integrated into the operation of the transmission network. The dissertation then deals with the modelling and simulation of a power system organized according to the developed concept. Besides, methods for the description of the flexibility of Smart Power Cells to support the operation of a transmission network are described. In addition, a control scheme for controlling the power which a Smart Power Cell exchanges with the transmission network is presented. Finally, the developed methods are tested by means of steady-state and dynamic simulations using a combined transmission-distribution test system designed for this purpose. The dissertation closes with a summary of the main contributions and a discussion of the research efforts required to bring the Smart Power Cell concept into life.

Modeling the electrical power and energy consumption of automated guided vehicles to improve the energy efficiency of production systems

Title: Modeling the electrical power and energy consumption of automated guided vehicles to improve the energy efficiency of production systems
Authors: Meißner, Matthias; Massalski, Lynn
Abstract: Due to the advancing energy system transformation and the increasingly complex and dynamic environment in which factories have to operate, the energy efficiency and flexible design of production systems are becoming more important. Since the use of automated guided vehicles is a promising approach to enhance the flexibility of intralogistics, their electrical power requirements are analyzed. Based on the measurement data obtained, different movement modules of an automated guided vehicle are identified and then modeled using physical laws. These movement modules are the translatory movement, rotary movement, and the lifting and lowering of the load-carrying platform. The measurement data show, for example, that the energy requirement for translational and rotational movement increases in relation to the payload weight. At the same time, however, it is also shown that an increase in speed of the automated guided vehicle leads to a lower energy requirement, although the power requirement grows. Consequently, one result is that an automated guided vehicle works most efficiently when the maximum payload is transported at the highest speed. With regard to the lifting and lowering of loads, the result is an increasing energy requirement depending on the payload weight. The comparison between the collected measurement data and the outcomes of the implemented simulation model shows only minor deviations. Thus, the implemented simulation model of automated guided vehicles can be used with regard to their electrical power consumption, for example, in production planning to comprehensively raise the energy efficiency of production systems.

Presentation of a novel real-time production supply concept with cyber-physical systems and efficiency validation by process status indicators

Title: Presentation of a novel real-time production supply concept with cyber-physical systems and efficiency validation by process status indicators
Authors: Bayhan, Haci; Meißner, Matthias; Kaiser, Pascal; Meyer, Maria; Ten Hompel, Michael
Abstract: Industry 4.0, digitization, and Internet of Things enable companies to react quickly and flexibly to market changes. The objective is the production of customized products at the cost of a mass-produced product. The widespread entry of cyber-physical systems enables a networking of all entities. The introduction of cyber-physical systems in production and logistic systems dissolves existing rigid structures and as a result versatile cyber-physical production systems occur. To support the flexibility of the cyber-physical production systems, the production supply needs to be adapted. For this reason, this paper proposes a novel universal production supply concept. This concept introduces a decentralized controlled supply. It is executed by several cyber-physical system entities, which are represented by software agents. These agents negotiate autonomously with each other. The novel concept was implemented in a research lab and evaluated quantitatively and qualitatively. For the quantitative evaluation, the efficiency of the novel concept is evaluated and compared with a kanban supply. An innovative key performance indicator system called process status indicators evaluates the efficiency. The result of this indicator system states that the novel concept is more efficient than the kanban supply.

Dezentrale Flexibilitätsoptionen und ihr Beitrag zum Ausgleich der fluktuierenden Stromerzeugung Erneuerbarer Energien
http://hdl.handle.net/2003/38409
Title: Dezentrale Flexibilitätsoptionen und ihr Beitrag zum Ausgleich der fluktuierenden Stromerzeugung Erneuerbarer Energien
Authors: Kippelt, Stefan

http://hdl.handle.net/2003/38096
Title: Gewerbliche Elektrofahrzeuge - Integration in das Energiesystem und wirtschaftliche Ladestrategien für Flotten
Authors: Plota, Ewa
In einem Anwendungsfall wird das Kostensenkungspotential von einer spezifischen Flotte ermittelt.; Almost 10 years after the publication of the National Development Plan for Electric Mobility, the number of battery electric vehicles and plug-in hybrids is around 100,000 and thus 10% of the German government's target for 2020. The commercial transport sector, with a total of around 6 million vehicles of passenger cars and light commercial vehicles, has the prerequisites to represent an entry segment and to drive market integration forward more strongly, thus justifying the focus of this work. First, the technical potential of a complete electrification of these two vehicle types at the system level of the German energy system will be quantitatively evaluated. This includes the energy-technical behaviour and the interaction with the feed-in characteristics of supply-dependent plants of renewable energy as well as the resulting storage demand. The seasonal and weekday-specific energy and load profiles used for this purpose are derived from the trip data records of the traffic study Kraftfahrzeuge in Deutschland. The economic potential of using a charging strategy in fleet operation will then be investigated with the aim of reducing the overall costs of electrification and thus increasing the amount early adopters of electric mobility. A method for the monetary evaluation of an arbitrary charge control will be designed. The latter is simulated based on an optimization algorithm. In one application the cost reduction potential of a specific fleet is presented.

Adaptable energy systems integration by modular, standardized and scalable system architectures

Title: Adaptable energy systems integration by modular, standardized and scalable system architectures
Authors: Hinker, Jonas; Wohlfahrt, Thomas; Mayorga Gonzalez, Daniel; Myrzik, Johanna Johanna; Dewing, Emily; Contreras Paredes, Sergia
Abstract: Energy conversion and distribution of heat and electricity is characterized by long planning horizons, investment periods and depreciation times, and it is thus difficult to plan and tell the technology that optimally fits for decades. Uncertainties include future energy prices, applicable subsidies, regulation, and even the evolution of market designs. To achieve higher adaptability to arbitrary transition paths, a technical concept based on integrated energy systems is envisioned and described. The problem of intermediate steps of evolution is tackled by introducing a novel paradigm in urban infrastructure design. It builds on standardization, modularization and economies of scale for underlying conversion units. Building on conceptual arguments for such a platform, it is then argued how actors like (among others) municipalities and district heating system operators can use this as a practical starting point for a manageable and smooth transition towards more environmental friendly supply technologies, and to commit to their own pace of transition (bearable investment/risk). Merits are not only supported by technical arguments but also by strategical and societal prospects like technology neutrality and availability of real options.

Title: Integration of residential distributed generators and heat pumps into the low voltage grid from a voltage level perspective
Authors: Arnold, Mark Philipp
Abstract: In context of combating climate change, carbon saving goals are defined on European
level. One effect of this is the increased installation of photovoltaic, heat pump and combined
heat and power systems on low voltage distribution grids. As the distribution grid
was not designed to handle this quantity of distributed generators and large loads, there
are undesirable influences. The voltage level is identified as the main issue in low voltage
grids. From the point of view of a manufacturer of such devices the influence on possible
connections to the low voltage grid and necessary measures are of interest. The characteristic
voltage influence of combined-heat-and-power, heat pump and photovoltaic systems is
evaluated. In order to quantify the influence, a 2020 penetration scenario of these devices
is developed using market expectation data. It is shown that different grids show violations
of the voltage limits according to EN 50160 and measures for voltage control are therefore
necessary in order to integrate the anticipated number of appliances. A range of measures
are evaluated regarding effectiveness, system operator and end-user economics, comfort
and environmental influence. The measures are based on grid operator equipment or enduser
appliances.
Battery storage based measures are identified as effective but very expensive compared
to other solutions. The most cost efficient measure is the installation of on-load
tap-changers at the low voltage transformers. Demand side management of heat pumps
can be effective under certain circumstances but end-user comfort is endangered here.
Considering the total economics, demand side management is more expensive than the
use of on-load tap changers. From a manufacturer perspective there are no additional
requirements for end-user appliances identified for voltage control on low voltage grids.
Connection restrictions and the grid planning process have to be reviewed in order to enable
cost efficient integration of the anticipated number of appliances in 2020. The results
are validated for increased generator penetrations in a ’maximum PV’ scenario.

http://hdl.handle.net/2003/35171
Authors: Zhao, Kaining
Abstract: Der Bedarf an elektrischer Energie, insbesondere in der dritten Welt, nimmt ständig zu.

Abstract: With increasing integration of the intermittent and
volatile renewable energy resources into the existing ac grid
infrastructure, the grid stability is decreasing. Large battery
storage systems are proposed to act as short-time buffer to cope
with transient instabilities. A promising converter to interface
such low-voltage high-power battery banks is the T-type Neutral-
Point-Clamped Converter (TNPC). A generalized implementation
of a variant of the well-known space vector modulation featuring
lower losses is proposed in this work. The derived relations to
select a particular switching sequence are based on the binary
logic and symmetry of the possible states in such a three-level
converter. The algorithm proposed in this work dynamically
adjusts the switching sequences to accommodate capacitive as
well as inductive behavior.

Abstract: An energy economy with high share of renewable but volatile energy sources is dependent on storage strategies in order to ensure sufficient energy delivery in periods of e.g. low wind and/or low solar radiation. Hydrogen as environmental friendly energy carrier is thought to be an appropriate solution for large scale energy storage. In 2011 the NOW (national organisation for hydrogen in Germany) calculated the demand for hydrogen energy systems as positive (0.8 GW to 5.25 GW) and negative supply for varying power demand (0.68 to 4.3 GW) for the German energy economy in 2025. Due to its dynamic behaviour on load changes polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells (PEMFC) as well as water electrolyser systems (PEMEL) can play a significant role for large scale hydrogen based storage systems. In this work a novel design concept for modular fuel cell and electrolyser stacks is presented with single cells in pockets surrounded by a hydraulic medium. This hydraulic medium introduces necessary compression forces on the membrane electrode assembly (MEA) of each cell within a stack. Furthermore, ideal stack cooling is achieved by this medium. Due to its modularity and scalability the modular stack design with hydraulic compression meets the requirements for large PEMFC as well as PEMEL units. Small scale prototypes presented in this work illustrate the potential of this design concept.

Authors: Terörde, Michael; Grumm, Florian; Schulz, Detlef; Wattar, Housam; Lemke, Jens

Abstract: Conventional electrical distribution systems onboard
aircraft use a three-phase system with a typical voltage of 115
VAC or 230 VAC to supply electrical loads. Future aircraft demand
more electric power due to the replacement of hydraulic and
pneumatic systems by electrical ones and the increased use of
multimedia entertainment systems. However, the aircraft weight
can be decreased if a high-voltage direct current (HVDC) grid
with a voltage level of ±270 VDC or 540 VDC is implemented to
supply the electrical loads. These higher voltages reduce cable
weight, but are a new challenge for solid-state power controllers
(SSPC), which are used as protection devices for cables and
loads. Currently available SSPCs are limited to lower voltages
and currents mainly because of the available power
semiconductors. A SSPC for aircraft applications with a nominal
voltage of 540 VDC and a nominal load current of 10 A has been
developed at the Helmut Schmidt University in Hamburg in
cooperation with Airbus Group Innovation using SiC-MOSFETs
and has been tested. In this paper the design and experimental
results are presented. The SSPC is able to supply itself from the
high voltage autarkic and can accomplish various functions.

Title: Steady State Analyse of existing Compressed Air Energy Storage Plants
Authors: Kaiser, Friederike
Editors: Kubis, Andreas; Rehtanz, Christian; Shapovalov, Anton; Hilbrich, Dominik; Plota, Ewa
Abstract: As compressed air energy storage (CAES) is a
promising energy storage technology that has already proven its
reliability in commercial operation some basic thermodynamic
information on this process are elaborated in this paper. It shows
a comparison of the thermodynamic process cycles of the CAES
plants in Huntorf and McIntosh that has been modeled in EES
(Engineering Equation Solver). Detailed T-s-Diagrams are given
to show the differences of reversible and irreversible
thermodynamic modeling of CAES. It is demonstrated that
irreversibility assumption leads to an over estimation of the plant
efficiency and therefore newer CAES concepts (like adiabatic
CAES) should not be approximated with reversibility
assumptions to avoid misleading statements.

Authors: Mohagheghi, E.; Gabash, A.; Li, P.
Editors: Kubis, Andreas; Rehtanz, Christian; Shapovalov, Anton; Hilbrich, Dominik; Plota, Ewa
Abstract: Wind power fluctuates with time and it is reasonable to regard it as a random variable. Recently, an active-reactive optimal power flow (A-R-OPF) method in active distribution networks with wind stations has been developed to handle the problem of wind power curtailment (WPC). Since the mentioned method is deterministic, it may fail to handle uncertain wind power (UWP). Therefore, our study in this paper will firstly discuss the issue of UWP and secondly develop a new strategy which can improve the A-R-OPF by considering UWP. The new strategy can be distinguished from the original so that: 1) it considers shorter time intervals, i.e., 15 minutes instead of one hour and 2) it can handle both UWP and WPC simultaneously. The effectiveness of the new strategy is shown by using a real case medium-voltage distribution network.

Abstract: A new method to transfer energy over short and long
distances is to use hybrid lines. In this paper a lightning surge
analysis for backflashovers on overhead transmission lines with
one DC and three AC systems on the same tower is considered.
Lightning strikes are the most common source of failures on
transmission systems and are not considered for hybrid lines.
The main aim is to get essential information about the behavior
of the HVDC system due to a backflashover. We simulate a
lightning stroke into a hybrid line using EMTP-ATP. The results
clearly show that the 110-kV AC systems provide protective
effects for the HVDC system. Therefore, it is concluded that
the backflashover performance of HVDC systems is better on
AC/DC hybrid lines, compared to identically constructed towers
with just one HVDC system installed.

Abstract: This paper proposes a novel dynamic design for
control reserve dimensioning. In contrast to the current statistical
analytic design we present a data driven approach with methods
of computational intelligence. The chosen k-nearest neighbor
algorithm is one of the most sucessfully used methods in machine
learning. The model is able to predict complex nonlinear behavior
by assuming that similar observations have similar outcomes.
A condition for the success of this method is to determine
the salient features. Therefore the core of this paper is to
show the dependencies of the influencing parameters. Numerical
experiments on the basis of freely available data for the years
2011 until 2013 show that there are time and space patterns as
well as inter dependencies with the active power market.

Editors: Kubis, Andreas; Rehtanz, Christian; Shapovalov, Anton; Hilbrich, Dominik; Plota, Ewa
Abstract: Rapid fault determination of single-phase earth fault (SPEF) and SPEF location on the line are extremely important for the speedy elimination of damage and restoring normal operation of the power supply. Effective methods of SPEF determination on the cable lines under voltage do not still exist in medium voltage networks. The electrical values of the transition process that occurs during the breakdown of the insulation can be used for solving the problem of determining the place of single-phase including self-eliminating faults. The best method to study the electromagnetic transients at SPEF in medium-voltage networks and to identify the information parameters, which can be used for distant SPEF determination, is a combination of analytical methods on the basis of simplified models of the electrical networks and the method of computer simulation.

Editors: Kubis, Andreas; Rehtanz, Christian; Shapovalov, Anton; Hilbrich, Dominik; Plota, Ewa

Abstract: The demand for increased transmission capacities in Germany will be covered in part by high voltage direct current (HVDC) lines. In order to reduce the need for new corridors, hybrid systems with AC and DC circuits together on the same tower are planned. Therefore, the characteristics of such arrangements need to be studied. In the first part of this paper, electromagnetic coupling mechanisms between overhead lines are summarized. Next, the method of image charges as a way to calculate the electric field around overhead lines is presented. The method is then used to analyze the electric field on ground level below three different hybrid line configurations.

Abstract: The energy turnaround caused a lot of challenges for
the power system as well in the distribution level as in the transmission
level. For the transmission level significant distances
between areas of high renewable generation, storage capacities
and centers of load require a bulk power transmission. As the
existing transmission system is not designed for such tasks, a
suitable solution is a meshed HVDC grid spanning the existing
AC grid. Most state of the art methodologies for controlling DC
node voltages can provoke DC oscillations due to their points of
discontinuity. This paper proposed a new continuous local
control characteristic and presents a methodology for its parameterization
according to available AC balancing control capabilities.

Abstract: Bridging the gap between theoretical modeling and practical implementation is essential in fault detection, classification, and location methods for modern distribution grids. Currently distribution grids are characterized by dispersed infeed and distributed power generation that render conventional protection settings more challenging, and, hence, new methods must be investigated to resolve these issues. In this paper, a novel framework capable of detecting and classifying faults in power distribution grids is presented. The proposed algorithm formulates a unique fault classification technique based on measurement samples of three-phase voltage and currents after the occurrence of a fault event in power distribution grid. Thereby, negative sequence components of three-phase voltage and current quantities are used for online fault detection that triggers a fault classification method based on a support vector machine. In order to simulate fault scenarios, a model of a reference distribution grid incorporating distributed generation is developed, simulated, and analyzed under fault conditions. For the final evaluation, the designed protection scheme is implemented on a Programmable Logic Controller connected to the model running on a real-time simulator hardware that provides voltage and current measurements. Thus experimental results are provided to demonstrate and prove the contribution of the algorithm in its ability to correctly identify and classify faults in modern distribution grids.

Title: Lastabwurfkonzept auf Basis von Jahresmittelwerten
Authors: Richter, André; Hauer, Ines
Editors: Kubis, Andreas; Rehtanz, Christian; Shapovalov, Anton; Hilbrich, Dominik; Plota, Ewa

Authors: Kanwar, Aastha; Rodríguez, Diego I. Hidalgo; von Appen, Jan; Braun, Martin
Editors: Kubis, Andreas; Rehtanz, Christian; Shapovalov, Anton; Hilbrich, Dominik; Plota, Ewa
Abstract: As local renewable energy based generation units
are being deployed worldwide, distribution grids are facing integration
challenges. Here, microgrids provide a solution, by allowing
intentional islanding and connection to the public distribution
grid depending upon its current state. Microgrids may consist of
loads, generation units and storages which can be operated as
a single controllable entity. This paper investigates two control
approaches for cost-efficient operation of grid-connected microgrids:
optimization- and rule-based control. For optimizationbased
control, a model predictive control algorithm with mixed
integer linear programming formulation is used. A case study
for a microgrid in an office building consisting of distributed
generation units and different storage units is presented to assess
the performance of the two control approaches. The simulation
results show the effectiveness of the optimization-based approach
and a potential for lower microgrid operating costs compared to
the rule-based approach.

Title: Energy System Modelling: Power Plant Dispatch and Electricity Generation Costs
Authors: Weiss, Thomas; Sperling, Christoph; Schulz, Detlef
Editors: Kubis, Andreas; Rehtanz, Christian; Shapovalov, Anton; Hilbrich, Dominik; Plota, Ewa
Abstract: The growing share of intermittent renewable energy on the electricity production has also an influence on the remaining thermal power plants. The full load hours, especially of fossil fired power plants, are decreasing over time. In the meantime, the energy surplus produced by renewable sources is increasing and without building new controllable power plants, the back-up capacity is decreasing because old fossil fired power plants will shut down. A lot of modelling has been done in this field yielding to very different results. This paper shows a generic approach to the calculation of the power plant dispatch and the electricity generation cost. The main focus is on the influence different scenario assumptions can have on the outcome of the investigation. The aim is to show how important an extensive sensitivity analyses is. As the ambitious climate targets of the government, the strong development of intermittent renewable energies as well as the nuclear phase out provide very good scenarios, the model will be explained on the example of Germany.

Title: Spannungsregelung im Niederspannungsnetz auf Basis eines Spannungsbeobachters
Authors: Tugend, Simon
Editors: Kubis, Andreas; Rehtanz, Christian; Shapovalov, Anton; Hilbrich, Dominik; Plota, Ewa
