Title: High-field/high-frequency EPR spectroscopy in protein research: principles and examples
Authors: Möbius, Klaus; Savitsky, Anton
Abstract: During the last decades, the combined efforts of biologists, chemists, and physicists in developing high-field/high-frequency EPR techniques and applying them to functional proteins have demonstrated that this type of magnetic resonance spectroscopy is particularly powerful for characterizing the structure and dynamics of stable and transient states of proteins in action on biologically relevant time scales ranging from nanoseconds to hours. The review article describes how high-field EPR methodology, in conjunction with site-specific isotope and spin-labeling strategies, is capable of providing new insights into fundamental biological processes. Specifically, we discuss the theoretical and instrumental background of continuous-wave and pulse high-field EPR and the multiple-resonance extensions EDNMR, ENDOR, TRIPLE, ESEEM, PELDOR, and RIDME. Some emphasis is placed on a balanced description of both the historical spadework and the achieved performance of advanced EPR at 95 GHz and 360 GHz. This culminates in a coherent treatment of state-of-the-art research of high-field EPR in terms of both instrumentation development and application to representative protein complexes such as cofactor binding sites in photosynthesis.2022-12-13T00:00:00ZSingle NV centers as sensors for radio-frequency fields

Title: Single NV centers as sensors for radio-frequency fields
Authors: Zhang, Jingfu; Suter, Dieter
Abstract: We show that a single electron spin can serve as a sensor for radio-frequency (rf) magnetic fields. The longitudinal and transverse components of the rf field can be extracted from the phase acquired during free evolution of the spin coherence. In our experimental demonstration, a single electron spin of an NV center in diamond serves as an atomic size of two components of an rf field.2023-05-09T00:00:00ZIsotope effects on the dynamics of amorphous ices and aqueous phosphoric acid solutions

Title: Isotope effects on the dynamics of amorphous ices and aqueous phosphoric acid solutions
Authors: Ahlmann, S.; Hoffmann, L.; Keppler, M.; Münzner, P.; Tonauer, C. M.; Loerting, T.; Gainaru, C.; Böhmer, R.
Abstract: The glass transitions of amorphous ices as well as of aqueous phosphoric acid solutions were reported to display very large 1H/2H isotope effects. Using dielectric spectroscopy, in both types of glassformers for equimolar protonated/deuterated mixtures an almost ideal isotope-mixing behavior rather than a bimodal relaxation is found. For the amorphous ices this finding is interpreted in terms of a glass-to-liquid rather than an orientational glass transition scenario. Based on calorimetric results revealing that major 16O/18O isotope effects are missing, the latter scenario was previously favored for the amorphous ices. Considering the dielectric results on 18O substituted amorphous ices and by comparison with corresponding results for the aqueous phosphoric acid solutions, it is argued that the present findings are compatible with the glass-to-liquid scenario. To provide additional information regarding the deeply supercooled state of 1H/2H isotopically mixed and 18O substituted glassformers, the aqueous phosphoric acid solutions are studied using shear mechanical spectroscopy as well, a technique which so far could not successfully be applied to characterize the glass transitions of the amorphous ices.2022-06-14T00:00:00ZSmall and Very Small Armed Aircraft and Missiles: Trends in Technology and Preventive Arms Control

Title: Small and Very Small Armed Aircraft and Missiles: Trends in Technology and Preventive Arms Control
Authors: Altmann, Jürgen; Suter, Dieter
Abstract: The project ‘Preventive Arms Control for Small and Very Small Armed Aircraft and Missiles’ investigates the properties of ever smaller aircraft and missiles and explores possibilities for preventive arms control.
The first part of this project report no. 3 covers the technological trends in both categories. (Further) miniaturisation is supported by civilian developments in mobile devices. Cheap production can allow swarms of very many uninhabited aerial vehicle (UAVs). Armed UAVs down to centimetre sizes and missiles down to 20 or 10 mm diameter are possible, with correspondingly very small destructive payloads.
The second part assesses small and very small armed aircraft and missiles under criteria of preventive arms control. Both categories raise problems, mainly for international humanitarian law and military stability. Arms races have to be feared, increasing the threat of proliferation to non-state actors. Options for preventive limitations, confidence building and export control are presented. Recommended are prohibitions of autonomous attack and of swarms of autonomous armed systems, independent of size. If these are unattainable, limits should be established for quality and quantity of swarms; lower limits should be set for the size of armed UAVs and missiles; at a minimum numerical thresholds on the holdings of small and very small UAVs and missiles should be agreed on.2023-03-01T00:00:00ZHydrogen-bonded complexes of neutral nitroxide radicals with 2-propanol studied by multifrequency EPR/ENDOR

Title: Hydrogen-bonded complexes of neutral nitroxide radicals with 2-propanol studied by multifrequency EPR/ENDOR
Authors: Savitsky, Anton; Nalepa, Anna; Petrenko, Taras; Plat, Martin; Möbius, Klaus; Lubitz, Wolfgang
Abstract: The hydrogen bond plays a key role in weak directional intermolecular interactions. It is operative in determining molecular conformation and aggregation, and controls the function of many chemical systems, ranging from inorganic, organic to biological molecules. Although an enormous amount of spectroscopic information has been collected about hydrogen-bond formation between molecules with closed-shell electronic configuration, the details of such interactions between open-shell radicals and closed-shell molecules are still rare. Here we report on an investigation of hydrogen-bonded complexes between pyrroline-type as well as piperidine-type neutral nitroxide radicals and an alcohol, i.e., 2-propanol. These nitroxide radicals are commonly used as EPR spin labels and probes. To obtain information on the geometry of the complexes and their electronic structure, multi-resonance EPR techniques at various microwave frequencies (X-, Q-, W-band, 244 GHz) have been employed in conjunction with DFT calculations. The planar five-membered ring system of the pyrroline-type nitroxide radical was found to form exclusively well-defined in-plane σ-type hydrogen-bonded complexes with one 2-propanol molecule in the first solvation shell in frozen solution. The measured hyperfine parameters of the hydrogen-bridge proton and the internal magnetic parameters describing the electron Zeeman and the electron-nuclear hyperfine and nuclear quadrupole interactions are in good agreement with values predicted by state-of-the-art DFT calculations. In contrast, multi-resonance EPR on the non-planar six-membered ring system of the piperidine-type nitroxide radical (TEMPOL) reveals a more complex situation, i.e., a mixture of a σ-type with, presumably, an out-of-plane π-type complex, both present in comparable fraction in frozen solution. For TEMPOL, the DFT calculations failed to predict magnetic interaction parameters that are in good agreement with experiment, apparently due to the considerable flexibility of the nitroxide and hydrogen-bonded complex. The detailed information about nitroxide/solvent complexes is of particular importance for Dynamic Nuclear Polarization (DNP) and site-directed spin-labeling EPR studies that employ nitroxides as polarizing agents or spin labels, respectively.2021-12-10T00:00:00ZDielectric coupler for general purpose Q-band EPR cavity

Title: Dielectric coupler for general purpose Q-band EPR cavity
Authors: Suter, Dieter; Savitsky, Anton; Judd, Martyna; Jolley, Greg; Cox, Nicholas
Abstract: Here, we report on a robust and efficient mechanism for tuning the microwave coupling of a Q-band (34 GHz), general purpose, cylindrical EPR cavity operating in the TE011 mode. This novel mechanism allows for both the adjustment of the cavity’s coupling over a wide frequency range, as well as its bandwidth from that of a high-Q cavity (about 10 MHz), to a broadband cavity (above 1 GHz). The coupling element consists of a dielectric plate fixed onto a movable waveguide short that allows for two modes of operation. In the first mode, the dielectric plate does not influence the resonance properties of the coupling iris and allows for precise, critical coupling of the high-Q cavity. In the second mode, the dielectric plate is positioned in front of the coupling iris, varying the iris’ resonance properties and allowing very strong overcoupling to be achieved. This mechanism can be generalized for other types of EPR cavities, in particular at high microwave frequencies.2021-08-19T00:00:00ZMechanische und elektrische Eigenschaften von Ionenleitern

Title: Mechanische und elektrische Eigenschaften von Ionenleitern
Authors: Ahlmann, Simon
Abstract: The current global interest in energy storage has triggered the development of new composite
materials and, consequently, new methodologies for manufacturing and testing these products.
In the energy storage research field their mechanical behavior is less investigated, despite of
their high both fundamental and technological relevance. To assess the interplay between charge
and mass transport, this thesis focusses on a large variety of electrolytes using shear rheology
and dielectric spectroscopy as examination methods. Tailoring the mechanical behavior of these
materials, this work investigates the impact of their local and macroscopic viscoelasticity on
their conductivity, with the ultimate goal of finding new recipes for improving the latter.
Our investigations from a series of mixtures with an ionic liquid and a dipolar one shows an
unusual shifting in the coupling between the mechanical and conductvity processes.
A survey of ionogels demonstrate that the interaction of charge carriers with their gel-like
matrix can affect conductivity even in the presence of a strong dynamical disparity between its
macroscopic mechanical and electrical parameters.
Finally, comparing ionic and proton conductors, it is shown that this decoupling significantly
enhances the conductivity in acid hydrates. Our results and their analysis show that enhancing the
degree of decoupling between the mechanical and electrical degrees of freedom, combined with a
reduction of charge correlations in highly concentrated electrolytes are essential for the development
of the next generation of energy storage materials.; Das derzeitige weltweite Interesse an der Energiespeicherung hat zur Entwicklung neuer Verbundwerkstoffe
Leitfähigkeit in Säurehydraten signifikant erhöht.

Auch für Kaliumpermanganat werden die Relaxationszeiten gemessen und bezüglich der Reorientierungsdynamik interpretiert.; Dynamic processes in molecular and ionic crystals are investigated using central line NMR on the strongly quadrupolar perturebed nuclei 11B and 17O. For this purpose, 11B relaxation times are measured in orthocarborane and interpreted in terms of molecular dynamics. In sodium nitrate, the three side jump of the planar nitrate group is studied by 17O NMR. The dynamics of the ion are investigated by NMR spectra, stimulated echoes and relaxation times. Combining the results from simulations with measured spectra, jump rates are determined. A 17O high temperature spectrum of sodium nitrate is described using averaged tensors. The reorientational dynamics in sodium nitrate has an activation energy of EA = 0.38 eV. As an example for a tetrahedral jump, potassium permanganate is studied using 17O NMR. Here, with the aid of stimulated echoes, an activation energy of EA = 0.35 eV is determined for the jumps of oxygen atoms. The relaxation times are also measured for potassium permanganate and interpreted with respect to the reorientational dynamics.2022-01-01T00:00:00ZSurvey of the Status of Small and Very Small Missiles

Title: From ultraslow to extremely fast dynamics in sodium nitrate
Authors: Beerwerth, Joachim; Siegel, R.; Hoffmann, Lars; Plaga, Lucie S.; Storek, Michael; Bojer, B.; Senker, J.; Hiller, Wolf; Böhmer, Roland
Abstract: Increasing dynamics in solids featuring nuclei subjected to second-order quadrupolar interactions lead to central-transition spectra that undergo two consecutive line-shaped transitions. Conventional motional narrowing occurs when the molecular exchange rate is on the order of the strength of the dominant interaction. In a second step, the resulting intermediately narrowed spectra change further when the motion becomes faster than the Larmor precession rate, leading to terminally narrowed spectra that can display a residual quadrupolar shift. We derive analytic expressions for this shift and analyze the quadrupolar central-transition spectra in terms of CN symmetrical cone models. Increasing the number of sites to N ≥ 3, the terminally narrowed spectra remain unaltered, while the intermediately narrowed spectra remain unaltered only for N ≥ 5. This finding relates to the different (cubic vs. icosahedral) symmetries that are required to average out the spatial second- and fourth-rank terms in the second-order quadrupolar interaction. Following recent work (Hung et al., Solid State Nucl Magn Reson 84:14–19, 2017), 17O NMR is applied to examine the three-site rotation of the nitrate group in NaNO3. Line shapes are measured and analyzed, and in addition to prior work, satellite-transition and stimulated-echo experiments are carried out. The final-state amplitudes extracted from the latter are reproduced using model calculations. It is shown how two-dimensional exchange spectra relating to N-site cone motions can be decomposed in terms of effective two-site-jump spectra. This latter approach is successfully tested for NaNO3.2020-05-28T00:00:00ZSurvey of the Status of Small Armed and Unarmed Uninhabited Aircraft

Title: Level anti-crossings of a nitrogen-vacancy center in diamond: decoherence-free subspaces and 3D sensors of microwave magnetic fields
Authors: Rao, K Rama Koteswara; Suter, Dieter
Abstract: Nitrogen-vacancy (NV) centers in diamond have become an important tool for quantumtechnologies. All of these applications rely on long coherence times of electron and nuclear spinsassociated with these centers. Here, we study the energy level anti-crossings of an NV center indiamond coupled to a first-shell13C nuclear spin in a small static magnetic field. These levelanti-crossings (LACs) occur for specific orientations of the static magnetic field due to the strongnon-secular components of the Hamiltonian. At these orientations we observe decoherence-freesubspaces, where the electron spin coherence times (T∗2) are 5–7 times longer than those at otherorientations. Another interesting property at these LACs is that individual transition amplitudesare dominated by a single component of the magnetic dipole moment. Accordingly, this can beused for vector detection of microwave magnetic fields with a single NV center. This is particularlyimportant to precisely control the center using numerical optimal control techniques.2020-10-30T00:00:00ZEfficient implementation of a quantum algorithm in a single nitrogen vacancy center of diamond

Title: Efficient implementation of a quantum algorithm in a single nitrogen vacancy center of diamond
Authors: Zhang, Jingfu; Hegde, Swathi S.; Suter, Dieter
Abstract: Quantum computers have the potential to speed up certain problems that are hard for classical
computers. Hybrid systems, such as the nitrogen vacancy (NV) center in diamond, are among
the most promising systems to implement quantum computing, provided the control of the different
types of qubits can be efficiently implemented. In the case of the NV center, the anisotropic hyperfine
interaction allows one to control the nuclear spins indirectly, through gate operations targeting the
electron spin, combined with free precession. Here we demonstrate that this approach allows one to
implement a full quantum algorithm, using the example of Grover's quantum search in a single NV
center, whose electron is coupled to a carbon nuclear spin.2020-06-30T00:00:00ZOptical detection of magnetic resonance

Title: Optical detection of magnetic resonance
Authors: Suter, Dieter
Abstract: The combination of magnetic resonance with laser spectroscopy provides some interesting options for increasing the sensitivity and information content of magnetic resonance. This review covers the basic physics behind the relevant processes, such as angular momentum conservation during absorption and emission. This can be used to enhance the polarization of the spin system by orders of magnitude compared to thermal polarisation as well as for detection with sensitivities down to the level of individual spins. These fundamental principles have been used in many different fields. This review summarises some of the examples in different physical system, including atomic and molecular systems, dielectric solids composed of rare earth and transition metal ions and semiconductors.2020-06-30T00:00:00ZApplication-specific microwave resonator development: addressing the challenges of modern electron paramagnetic resonance

Title: Application-specific microwave resonator development: addressing the challenges of modern electron paramagnetic resonance
Authors: Sidabras, Jason W.
Abstract: Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) is a spectroscopic technique to study the
interaction between free electrons and the local molecular environment. Over the past 60
years, EPR instrumentation and methodology has been developed to study, for example,
the structure and dynamics of proteins, chemical reactions of organic-based radicals,
transition-metal chemistry, catalytic reactions, electron transfer processes, and metalloenzymes.
Because of these past developments, EPR has become a powerful tool for
chemists and physicists alike.
However, there remain several challenges in modern EPR that can be addressed by
the development of application-specific microwave resonators. Three challenges are investigated:
(i) improving the homogeneity of the magnetic flux density profile incident
on a sample volume for applications to pulse EPR at Q-band frequencies (35 GHz); (ii)
enhancing the sensitivity of EPR in the THz-bandgap (100 GHz to 1 THz frequency
range; 3.34-33.36 cm1 energy range) to improve the detection of thin films with the
use of a resonant meta-materials; and (iii) improving the absolute sensitivity at X-band
frequencies (9.5 GHz) for the study of protein single-crystals with volumes less than
85 nl. First, the introduction of a uniform field re-entrant TE01U cavity at Q-band
frequencies provides a 10 mm region-of-interest with a microwave field uniformity of 98%.
The homogeneous field increases the microwave conversion factor by 60%. This design
implements a waveguide H-type T-junction coupler with inductive obstacles to improve
the coupling efficiency. The resonator is tested with a standard sample and shown to
significantly improve the excitation profile for pulse EPR. Second, an investigation of the
interaction between a split-ring resonator meta-material surface and a protein sample is
presented as a way to increase the EPR signal for sub-THz frequencies. Data is collected
using Frequency-Domain Fourier-Transform THz-EPR in the energy range of 11-18 cm1.
The interaction of the EPR signal with a meta-material resonating at 14 cm1 is modeled
with a lumped-circuit transmission-line. It was found that both inductive and capacitive
coupling is required to fully understand this complex system. From this analysis, a factor
of 4 in the EPR signal is shown for an active sample height of 24 m. Next, the absolute
sensitivity at X-band frequencies has been increased up to a factor of 30 compared to
commercial resonators by the implementation of a self-resonant micro-helix. This 0.4 mm
inner diameter helix provides a resonator efficiency of 3.2 mT/W1=2 corresponding to a
=2 pulse of 20 ns with an incident power of only 20 mW in a volume of 85 nl. This
geometry is measured to have an absolute spin sensitivity of 64 106 Spins/G in 50
minutes of measurement time. Finally, the self-resonant micro-helix is used to obtain, for
the first time, the angular dependence of the EPR signal from a protein single-crystal of
[FeFe]-hydrogenase in the Hox state from Clostridium pasteurianum (CpI) with a volume
of 3 nL. A signal-to-noise ratio of 290 was achieved for 4:25 109 spins in 8 minutes of
measurement time. Full g-tensor analysis was successfully performed and an orientation
of the principal axes is discussed. With the excellent signal-to-noise ratio, data was also
collected on the same protein crystal using an ESEEM/HYSCORE pulse sequence.
In total, this work pushes the state-of-the-art in EPR instrumentation allowing for
new methodology development and broadening the applications available to chemists

Title: Efficient quantum gates for individual nuclear spin qubits by indirect control
Authors: Hegde, Swathi S.; Zhang, Jingfu; Suter, Dieter
Abstract: Hybrid quantum registers, such as electron-nuclear spin systems, have emerged as promising hardware for implementing quantum information and computing protocols in scalable systems. Nevertheless, the coherent control of such systems still faces challenges. Particularly, the lower gyromagnetic ratios of the nuclear spins cause them to respond slowly to control fields, resulting in gate times that are generally longer than the coherence time of the electron. Here, we demonstrate a scheme for circumventing this problem by indirect control: we apply a small number of short pulses only to the electron and let the full system undergo free evolution under the hyperfine coupling between the pulses. Using this scheme, we realize robust quantum gates in an electron-nuclear spin system, including a Hadamard gate on the nuclear spin and a controlled-NOT gate with the nuclear spin as the target qubit. The durations of these gates are shorter than the electron coherence time, and thus additional operations to extend the system coherence time are not needed. Our demonstration serves as a proof of concept for achieving efficient coherent control of electron-nuclear spin systems, such as nitrogen vacancy centers in diamond. Our scheme is still applicable when the nuclear spins are only weakly coupled to the electron.2020-06-02T00:00:00ZOptimal photon energies for initialization of hybrid spin quantum registers of NV centers in diamond

Title: Optimal photon energies for initialization of hybrid spin quantum registers of NV centers in diamond
Authors: Rao, K. Rama Koteswara; Wang, Yihua; Zhang, Jingfu; Suter, Dieter
Abstract: Initializing quantum registers with high fidelity is a fundamental precondition for many applications like quantum information processing and sensing. The electronic and nuclear spins of a Nitrogen-Vacancy (NV) center in diamond form an interesting hybrid quantum register that can be initialized by a combination of laser, microwave, and radio-frequency pulses. However, the laser illumination, which is necessary for achieving electron spin polarization, also has the unwanted sideeffect of depolarizing the nuclear spin. Here, we study how the depolarization dynamics of the 14N nuclear spin depends on the laser wavelength. We show experimentally that excitation with an orange laser (594 nm) causes signifficantly less nuclear spin depolarization compared to the green laser (532 nm) typically used for excitation and hence leads to higher nuclear spin polarization. This could be because orange light excitation inhibits ionization of NV^0 into NV^_ and therefore suppresses one source of noise acting on the nuclear spin.2020-04-03T00:00:00ZLineare und nichtlineare rheologische Untersuchungen von Relaxationsprozessen in glasbildenden Flüssigkeiten

Authors: Bierwirth, Sebastian Peter
Abstract: Analyzing and characterizing mechanical properties of polymers is a vast field of research. In
this thesis, linear and nonlinear rheological investigations have been used to study the relaxation
behavior of various glass-forming liquids.
In simple (non-associating and non-polymeric) liquids, the microscopic flow behavior is associated
to the mass transport which is defined by the dynamics of the molecules and therefore the
structural relaxation. This is usually discussed in the literature in terms of shear modulus or
shear compliance, however, in this work it has been additionally analyzed in terms of fluidity.
This quantity seems to exhibit an universal frequency dependence which, interestingly, matches
the one previously signaled for the case of conductivity probed via dielectric spectroscopy in
disordered ionic conductors. Based on this equivalence, the phenomenological and theoretical
concepts previously developed for the characterization of charge transport have been adopted
to the mass transport that is intrinsic to the molecular flow.
In complex liquids, the macroscopic flow properties are driven by supra structural motions such
as the chain dynamics in polymers or the so-called Debye process in hydrogen bonded liquids.
They give rise to additional low-frequency relaxation modes in the rheological spectrum. A broad
correlation between the rheological properties of the supramolecular and the structural relaxation
process has been found.
Mixing various pure substances featuring supramolecular modes, changes in their supramolecular
properties can be induced in their linear mechanical response. It was found that the investigated
mixtures also follow the above-mentioned correlation of the pure substances. Furthermore, for
the first time evidence for two individual structural relaxations in mixed systems of low molecular
weight glass forming liquids has been found by means of linear rheology.
For glass formers such as alcohols, for which network formation is caused by rather weak and
transient hydrogen bonds, supramolecular relaxation processes are often hard to identify in linear
measurements. To render their characterization possible the measurements have been extended
to the nonlinear regime. A Fourier-analysis technique which allows the detection of the slowest
relaxation modes in polymer science has been adopted and succesfully applied for low molecular
weight glass-forming liquids. In this way one is able to reveal that the nonlinear parameters
which characterize the slowest relaxation mode show a universal frequency dependence. The
timescale of the energy transfer to the liquid from the nonlinear excitation corresponds well to
the characteristic time scale of the structural relaxation process. Additionally a new correlation
between the linear and nonlinear rheological parameters of both simple and complex liquids has
been found.2019-01-01T00:00:00ZBiomolecular EPR meets NMR at high magnetic fields

Title: Biomolecular EPR meets NMR at high magnetic fields

Abstract: In this review on advanced biomolecular EPR spectroscopy, which addresses both the EPR and NMR communities, considerable emphasis is put on delineating the complementarity of NMR and EPR regarding the measurement of interactions and dynamics of large molecules embedded in fluid-solution or solid-state environments. Our focus is on the characterization of protein structure, dynamics and interactions, using sophisticated EPR spectroscopy methods. New developments in pulsed microwave and sweepable cryomagnet technology as well as ultrafast electronics for signal data handling and processing have pushed the limits of EPR spectroscopy to new horizons reaching millimeter and sub-millimeter wavelengths and 15 T Zeeman fields. Expanding traditional applications to paramagnetic systems, spin-labeling of biomolecules has become a mainstream multifrequency approach in EPR spectroscopy. In the high-frequency/high-field EPR region, sub-micromolar concentrations of nitroxide spin-labeled molecules are now sufficient to characterize reaction intermediates of complex biomolecular processes. This offers promising analytical applications in biochemistry and molecular biology where sample material is often difficult to prepare in sufficient concentration for NMR characterization. For multifrequency EPR experiments on frozen solutions typical sample volumes are of the order of 250 μL (S-band), 150 μL (X-band), 10 μL (Q-band) and 1 μL (W-band). These are orders of magnitude smaller than the sample volumes required for modern liquid- or solid-state NMR spectroscopy. An important additional advantage of EPR over NMR is the ability to detect and characterize even short-lived paramagnetic reaction intermediates (down to a lifetime of a few ns). Electron–nuclear and electron–electron double-resonance techniques such as electron–nuclear double resonance (ENDOR), ELDOR-detected NMR, PELDOR (DEER) further improve the spectroscopic selectivity for the various magnetic interactions and their evolution in the frequency and time domains. PELDOR techniques applied to frozen-solution samples of doubly spin-labeled proteins allow for molecular distance measurements ranging up to about 100 Å. For disordered frozen-solution samples high-field EPR spectroscopy allows greatly improved orientational selection of the molecules within the laboratory axes reference system by means of the anisotropic electron Zeeman interaction. Single-crystal resolution is approached at the canonical g-tensor orientations—even for molecules with very small g-anisotropies. Unique structural, functional, and dynamic information about molecular systems is thus revealed that can hardly be obtained by other analytical techniques. On the other hand, the limitation to systems with unpaired electrons means that EPR is less widely used than NMR. However, this limitation also means that EPR offers greater specificity, since ordinary chemical solvents and matrices do not give rise to EPR in contrast to NMR spectra. Thus, multifrequency EPR spectroscopy plays an important role in better understanding paramagnetic species such as organic and inorganic radicals, transition metal complexes as found in many catalysts or metalloenzymes, transient species such as light-generated spin-correlated radical pairs and triplets occurring in protein complexes of photosynthetic reaction centers, electron-transfer relays, etc. Special attention is drawn to high-field EPR experiments on photosynthetic reaction centers embedded in specific sugar matrices that enable organisms to survive extreme dryness and heat stress by adopting an anhydrobiotic state. After a more general overview on methods and applications of advanced multifrequency EPR spectroscopy, a few representative examples are reviewed to some detail in two Case Studies: (I) High-field ELDOR-detected NMR (EDNMR) as a general method for electron–nuclear hyperfine spectroscopy of nitroxide radical and transition metal containing systems; (II) High-field ENDOR and EDNMR studies of the Oxygen Evolving Complex (OEC) in Photosystem II, which performs water oxidation in photosynthesis, i.e., the light-driven splitting of water into its elemental constituents, which is one of the most important chemical reactions on Earth.2018-11-06T00:00:00ZHochauflösende Strömungsbildgebung und Gewebeanalyse mit der bildgebenden Kernspinresonanz

Abstract: The World Health Organization has been listing cardiovascular disease and its sequelae as one of the leading causes of death worldwide for several years in its annual report. In general this includes all disease that originates from the vascular system and / or from the heart. Due to the high patient rate, there is great interest in researching the exact processes and effects of the diseases on the tissue as well as on the flow behavior. These can be used to develop therapeutic options, but also to expand existing basic research.
Microscopic magnetic resonance imaging has been shown to be a suitable tool to analyze flow behavior within 3D printed vessel models of different shapes and is therefore also used as a methodology in this work. Prepared tissue samples were successfully acquired with high resolution, allowing calcifications, potentially in vivo, to be visualized and compared with other samples. In addition, a program could be created, which allows the calculation of the inner free area in the tissue. This could be used to visualize possible changes in the tissue structure over a certain period of time, but also as a snapshot at the time of measurement. To analyze the flow behavior, Newtonian and non-Newtonian fluids are used. The initial measurements were performed with water as Newtonian fluid. Afterwards we were looking for a blood substitute solution which behavior is as close as possible to the behavior of blood. For this purpose, various xanthan mixtures with a xanthan amount between 75 mg and 1200 mg per liter of water were prepared and examined by rheometer, as well as by the time-of-flight method of MRI on its properties as a potency fluid. It could be shown that in the relevant shear range of our measurements (50-60 1 / s) the xanthan mixture is a good substitute for blood. The measurements with the phase contrast sequence were mainly performed on two types of vascular models. They were performed on an aneurysm model, as well as various stenosis models. The measurements allow the acquisition of the three-dimensional velocity profile of the different model geometries and thus a detailed representation of the spatial evolution of the shift of the velocity field after a change in the model. Subsequently, the deviation of the flow profile between the theoretical power law and the measured data were determined in order to get the distance in which the flow behaviour has returned to its normal state. Furthermore, a potential guideline may be established on how much further after the disturbance of the flow behavior the simulations should be performed depending on the specific alteration. This distance determination was carried out for three different categories. On the one hand the dependence of different stenosis degrees was examined. In addition, the flow rate was varied and on the other hand the concentration dependence was considered. An exponential or rather quadratic relationship could be determined empirically. Finally, the stenosis models and the aneurysm model were examined for their wall shear stress. This is an important criterion to better understand the changes in the vessel wall, such as aneurysms, as well as to estimate a potential rupture risk for the areas with differing wall shear stress. It could be shown that in general there are strongly increased values at the stenosis constrictions and also at the opposite wall. These sites are potentially highly vulnerable spots in the tissue that have an increased risk of breakthrough. Furthermore, these sites are susceptible to the formation of aneurysms.; Die Weltgesundheitsorganisation führt seit mehreren Jahren kardiovaskuläre Erkrankungen und deren Folgeerkrankungen als eine der häufigsten Todesursachen weltweit in ihrem jährlichen Bericht.

Title: Einfluss von Dotierstoffen auf die Dynamik von Eisphasen

Title: Acoustic-seismic coupling of broadband signals – support for on-site inspections under the Comprehensive Nuclear Test-Ban-Treaty
Authors: Liebsch, Mattes
Abstract: In this PhD thesis the process of acoustic-seismic coupling and a method to reduce acoustically induced soil vibrations by applying an acoustic shielding to seismic sensors are investigated.
The research is motivated by the verification of the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty: During on-site inspections sensitive seismic measurements can be performed to record seismic aftershocks created in the aftermath of a large, underground, human-caused explosion. This aims to precisely localise the hypocentre of that explosion to verify whether its origin was a nuclear or chemical one. However, these seismic measurements can be disturbed by other seismic signals in the inspection area and thus weak aftershock signals might go undetected. In this work disturbances caused by airborne sources are analysed: When sound waves hit the ground they excite soil vibrations which can mask weak aftershock signals. The findings of this work can be used in the development of new guidelines to improve the sensitivity of seismic on-site inspection measurements.
For this measurements of sound pressure and the acoustically excited soil velocity, recorded with geophones places at the soil surface and in burying depths of up to 0.6 m, in flat terrain with sandy soil, are presented. The acoustic excitation was realised by broadband sound of jet-aircraft overflights, covering a broad range of incidence angles and due to the large distance arriving as plane waves, and of noise artificially produced by a speaker. By evaluating a multitude of overflight events it is shown that the acoustic-seismic coupling coefficient (i.e. the spectral ratio between soil velocity and sound pressure) only depends on the angle of incidence of the acoustic wave and the frequency. Thus, angle-dependent averaging of the coupling coefficient, obtained from the signals of several overflight events, can be performed which significantly improves the signal-to-noise ratio. While previous publications presented only pointwise measurements in this work results for a wide range of angles of incidence and frequencies are presented.
In seismic spectra signal frequency bands of increased and decreased soil velocity are observed. These are caused by interfering seismic waves: The directly acoustically excited wave and waves which have been acoustically excited in a certain horizontal distance and which have been reflected within the ground before reaching the sensor.
The seismic response to the broadband acoustic excitation with a range of incidence angles is used to obtain near-surface soil properties e.g. the P-wave velocity and the depth of the reflecting boundary. For this three theoretical models are introduced taking into account contributions of different numbers and types of the interfering waves. While sensors placed at the surface generally lead to the most reliable results, buried sensors are used to verify the models.
Additionally, during several measurements an acoustic shielding is placed over some sensors. Thus, the sound pressure of the incident acoustic waves is reduced significantly. From the soil velocity recorded with the shielded geophones and the reflection characteristics the horizontal propagation range of acoustically induced seismic signals is estimated. It is shown that treating the process of acoustic-seismic coupling as a local effect is an insufficient approach.
Finally, first suggestions for acoustic shieldings to reduce disturbing signals during sensitive seismic measurements are presented and the applicability during on-site inspections is discussed. An outlook for further research is given: Design and material of a suitable acoustic shielding should be investigated to fulfil requirements of high acoustic damping properties for signals of frequencies of a few Hz.2017-01-01T00:00:00ZKernmagnetische 7Li-, 23Na- und 17O-Resonanz-Untersuchungen zu atomaren Austauschprozessen in Festkörpern

Abstract: Kernmagnetische 7Li-, 23Na-, und 17O-Resonanz-Untersuchungen zu atomaren Austauschprozessen in Festkörpern

Title: Development of rapid methods for relaxation time mapping and motion estimation using magnetic resonance imaging
Authors: Gilani, Syed Irtiza Ali
Abstract: Recent technological developments in the field of magnetic resonance imaging
have resulted in advanced techniques that can reduce the total time to acquire images.
For applications such as relaxation time mapping, which enables improved visualisation
of in vivo structures, rapid imaging techniques are highly desirable. TAPIR is a Look-
Locker-based sequence for high-resolution, multislice T1 relaxation time mapping.
Despite the high accuracy and precision of TAPIR, an improvement in the k-space
sampling trajectory is desired to acquire data in clinically acceptable times. In this
thesis, a new trajectory, termed line-sharing, is introduced for TAPIR that can
potentially reduce the acquisition time by 40 %. Additionally, the line-sharing method
was compared with the GRAPPA parallel imaging method. These methods were
employed to reconstruct time-point images from the data acquired on a 4T high-field
MR research scanner. Multislice, multipoint in vivo results obtained using these
methods are presented. Despite improvement in acquisition speed, through line-sharing,
for example, motion remains a problem and artefact-free data cannot always be
obtained. Therefore, in this thesis, a rapid technique is introduced to estimate in-plane
motion. The presented technique is based on calculating the in-plane motion parameters,
i.e., translation and rotation, by registering the low-resolution MR images. The rotation
estimation method is based on the pseudo-polar FFT, where the Fourier domain is
composed of frequencies that reside in an oversampled set of non-angularly, equispaced
points. The essence of the method is that unlike other Fourier-based registration
schemes, the employed approach does not require any interpolation to calculate the
pseudo-polar FFT grid coordinates. Translation parameters are estimated by the phase
correlation method. However, instead of two-dimensional analysis of the phase
correlation matrix, a low complexity subspace identification of the phase correlation
matrix is employed. This method is beneficial because it offers sub-pixel displacement
estimation without interpolation, increased robustness to noise and limited
computational complexity. Owing to all these advantages, the proposed technique is
very suitable for the real-time implementation to solve the motion correction problem.2008-11-11T11:50:35ZDielektrische Untersuchungen an organischen Glasbildnern

Abstract: The thesis deals with phenomena of molecular diffusion in liquid environments. The examination of diffusing molecules provides information about the molecules themselves, and also about the structure of the surrounding media. This work deals with diffusion phenomena on length scales
below 100 μm. The liquid phase consists of water or water/surfactant emulsions. The microstructures are fluidic channels etched in wafers of crystalline silicon. In these channels, diffusion-limited mixing at a liquid boundary is examined. These experiments took place in a stationary
liquid flow. Environments on the nanoscale are made of binary liquids forming supramolecular orders by self-assembly. From these structures, the micellar and the lamellar structure are examined
in particular. The focus is on the influence of cholesterol on the mobility of probe molecules in the lamellar phase. The main experimental method is Fluorescence Correlation Spectroscopy (FCS). Additionally, fundamentals for the tracking of single molecules are established by analyzing
video recordings of fluorescing particles. The thesis provides advanced insight into the nature of molecular motion in nearly ideal systems. Further conclusions for investigations in natural environments, as they exist in eukaryotic cells, can be drawn from the experiments.2007-09-06T10:33:23ZMessung der Dekohärenz in hoch korrelierten Kernspinsystemen

Abstract: The technique of coherent Raman (optically) detected electron paramagnetic resonance (ODEPR), is a relatively new method for the investigation of electronic structure. In this thesis the technique is implemented with a microwave frequency of 35 GHz for the first time.
Two continuous wave (cw) ODEPR spectrometers have been built (14 and 35 GHz). Pulsed microwave excitation is possible at 14 GHz.
The application to ruby demonstrates the working of the technique and the equipment.
When ODEPR is used to analyse metalloproteins, conventional methods like electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) and magnetic circular dichroism (MCD) are additionally needed. These have also been implemented and they are demonstrated on myoglobin (Mb).; The technique of coherent Raman (optically) detected electron paramagnetic resonance (ODEPR), is a relatively new method for the investigation of electronic structure.

Successful low pass filtering demonstrates that the relaxation in ortho-carboran exhibits dynamic heterogeneity.Filtering is less efficient as compared to supercooled liquids andpolymers implying that the intrinsic dynamics of ortho-carboraneis non-exponential.A stochastic modell for the molecular reorientation is deduced that canreproduce most of the experimental results.2003-02-26T00:00:00Zfemtosecond laser ablation

Title: femtosecond laser ablation
Authors: Margetic, Vanja
Abstract: Femtosecond laser ablation was investigated as a solid sampling method for elemental chemical analysis. In comparison to the sampling with longer laser pulses, two aspects could be improved by using ultrashort pulses: elimination of the elemental fractionation from the ablation crater, which is necessary for an accurate quantitative analysis, and better control of the material removal (especially for metals), which increases the spatial resolution of microanalysis. Basic aspects of ultrashort laser ablation were studied using laser induced fluorescence (LIF), laser induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) and laser ablation time of flight mass spectrometry (LA-TOF-MS). The results of the LIF study of plasma expansion fit to the spherical expansion model. The spectroscopic studies of plasma emission and determination of the excitation temperature served to find suitable conditions for quantitative elemental analysis by LIBS. The highly energetic ions (10 keV) that antecede the plume expansion were observed under high vacuum conditions in the TOF spectrometer during ablation of metals and semiconductors. Measurements with additional acceleration indicate high ionisation states. The elimination of the elemental fractionation was demonstrated in LIBS and fs laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) experiments on metals, alloys and glass samples. The in-depth profiling of thin layered structures was proposed as the most promissing application of the femtosecond laser ablation in chemical analytics. Rapid analysis of multilayered samples with depth resolution better than 100 nm and lateral resolution of 10-50 µm is feasible. A homogeneous laser beam intensity profile and a high pulse-to-pulse energy stability are the prerequisites for a successful in-depth profiling.2003-01-07T00:00:00ZAdvancements in optically detected nuclear magnetic resonance applied to nanoscopic GaAs AlGaAs heterostructures

Title: Advancements in optically detected nuclear magnetic resonance applied to nanoscopic GaAs AlGaAs heterostructures
Authors: Lenzmann, Björn
Abstract: This thesis presents advancements in the spectroscopic method of optically detected nuclear magnetic resonance (ODNMR) applied to semiconductor heterostructures to investigate nanoscopic structural details in these systems. Experiments are carried out on type I GaAs/AlGaAs quantum wells of various thicknesses, investigating new aspects about the behaviour of the coupled electron-nuclear spin system. Characterization and interpretation of the specific features of the ODNMR spectra are carried out, providing spectroscopic applications for studying low-dimensional heterostructure systems. Utilizing the sensitivity and selectivity of ODNMR, structural information is revealed about GaAs/AlGaAs interfaces and quantum wells.A high degree of nuclear spin polarization is achieved by optically pumping he coupled electron-nuclear spin system. The hyperfine coupling constant is derived for quantum wells of various thicknesses by calculating the electronic wavefunction within a quantum well and values for the magnetic fields of electronic and nuclear origin are estimated. The ODNMR technique is used to investigate different relaxation processes governing the optical pumping such as the field dependent optical pumping relaxation time, the 'dark' relaxation time and the hyperfine relaxation time. It is shown that delocalized optically oriented electrons do not contribute to polarizing the nuclear spin system. It is assumed that trapping of excitons at interface defects plays the key role in amplifying the hyperfine interaction. A model is presented, to approximate the effect on the hyperfine relaxation time and it is found that the relaxation time is decreased by one to two orders of magnitude compared to unbound excitons. The ODNMR resonance lines show large splitting which are attributed to quadrupole interactions of the nuclei with electric field gradients caused by the neighbouring atoms. The reduction of the cubic symmetry of GaAs is attributed to interfacial effects at the GaAs/AlGaAs barrier, to strain within the quantum well applied externally by the mounting of the sample, and by a homogenous electric field across the sample. The spectra also show significant broadening of the satellite lines, which arises from internal strain created by lattices mismatch of the heterostructure and by monolayer splitting (interface roughness), which creates an additional shear strain component.2003-01-07T00:00:00ZOptisch detektierte paramagnetische Resonanz-Spektroskopie am Rubin

Abstract: The optically detected paramagnetic resonance has been proven to be a valuable method for the investigation of the electronic structure of transition metal in metallo-proteins. Up to now a model has been used for the interpretation of the experimental spectra which described this experiment on the basis of circular magnetic dichroism, which is induced by a rotating transverse magnetization. This model of magnetic circular dichroism induced by a rotating magnetization is just applicable to special kinds of transition metal systems and a special optical configuration of this experiment. In this thesis it will be shown, that a theory, based on the model of coherent Raman-scattering, provides a much more general description of this experiment. This will be demonstrated on the experimental spectra at the R-lines of the ruby cristal. These spectra can not be interpreted by the model of transverse MCD and show a very complex structure. The optical and magnetic properties of the chromium ions in ruby have been investigated in the last century extensively. Thus ruby is an ideal testing system, to proof the advantages of the model of coherent Raman scattering and to obtain a deeper insight into the nature of this spectroscopic method.; Die optisch detektierte paramagnetische Resonanz hat sich als eine wertvolle Methode zur Untersuchung der elektronischen Struktur von Übergangsmnetallen in Metallo-Proteinen bewährt.

Abstract: Metalloproteins, that is proteins containing metal ions, play a key role in biochemical processess. This thesis presents a novel spectroscopic technique, optically detected electron paramagnetic resonance (ODEPR) spectroscopy, which can be applied to the study of metalloproteins. In this work experimental results from different biological samples are presented, where we focus on the copper protein azurin and the iron-sulfurprotein rubredoxin. In addition, the ODEPR spectra are interpreted by means of a theoretical model, which leads to the determination of key parameters such as the optical polarisation of the involved transitions. This thesis demonstrates that ODEPR spectroscopy can serve to improve our understanding of the electronic structure of metalloproteins, and to complement standard spectroscopy methods.2001-08-13T00:00:00ZOptisch detektierte NMR durch kohärente Ramanstreuung

Title: Optisch detektierte NMR durch kohärente Ramanstreuung
Authors: Neuhaus, Rudolf

Die Anwendbarkeit der faseroptischen SERS-Sensoren als chemische Sensoren wurde anhand von Beschichtungen mit selektiv adsorbierenden Rezeptormolekülen untersucht.; Single-fibre sensors using surface-enhanced Raman-scattering were prepared by depositing rough metal films at the tips of optical fibres. Different deposition techniques such as slow evaporation of metal island films and vacuum deposition of metal films over nanoparticles or on pre-roughened surfaces or on surfaces structured by electron beam lithography were applied and compared. Laser power effects on SERS sensors were investigated and maximum laser intensities were determined above which a reduction of SERS enhancement is indicated. The superposition of surface Raman spectra from the tips and Raman spectra of the fibre core made maximum enhancements necessary for the construction of long fibre sensors. The enhancement was improved significantly by altering the tip geometry (using angled polishing and conical etching). The applicability of SERS-active fibre tips as chemical sensors was investigated by coating them with selectively adsorbing receptor molecules.2001-02-21T00:00:00ZOptische Detektion der magnetischen Resonanz mit modengekoppelten Femtosekunden-Pulsen

Title: Optische Detektion der magnetischen Resonanz mit modengekoppelten Femtosekunden-Pulsen
Authors: Schmidt, Volker

Title: Untersuchungen zur derivativen Diodenlaser-Spektrometrie an Mikrowellen-induzierten Niederdruckplasmen
Authors: Koch, Joachim
