Title: A Framework for Segmentation and Contour Approximation in Computer-Vision Systems
In this thesis, a framework for segmentation and contour approximation in computer-vision systems is presented. The goal of the system is the recognition and spatial isolation of persons and objects in video images in front of a known background. For this purpose, a hierarchical multi-level segmentation system with internal feedback mechanisms is introduced, which consists of a low-level, a mid-level, and a high-level processing stage. The low-level processing stage performs a pixelwise segmentation and acquires detailed knowledge about the background in fuzzy knowledge bases. The mid-level processing stage subdivides the image area in rectangular boxes and applies a fuzzy rule-based pattern recognition system to these box areas. Finally, the high-level processing stage incorporates application-dependent knowledge about the objects that have to be found in order to eliminate possible misclassifications. Internal feedback mechanisms allow for continuous learning of the background, online adaption of parameters, and a continuous improvement of the segmentation results. Moreover, a new algorithm for contour approximation is introduced. The algorithm is suitable for real-time applications, requires only few parameters, and is based on mere geometric calculations. A special emphasis of this work has been laid on the anticipation of varying and changing illumination, which often leads to severe problems for segmentation algorithms. The good capabilities of the algorithm are achieved by extensively exploiting main memory. The good overall performance of the introduced system is demonstrated on the basis of different applications.
