For some years it has been observed that company and industry structures in the automobile industry are changing: the automobile companies shift more complex production tasks to component suppliers and transfer development activities to specialised engineering service companies. These changes not only affect the structure of the automobile industry itself, but also the actors and systems of industrial relations that have to deal with them. Against this background, the project Engineering Services in the Automobile Industry: Importance, Co-operation and Consequences for Industrial Relations , that was funded by the Hans-Böckler-Stiftung, gained first insights into the field of engineering services in the automobile industry. It examined the development and importance of engineering-outsourcing, the co-operation between automobile and engineering companies and the consequences of this development for the representation of employees interests.en
