In the mid 80s at the University of Dortmund the development of a new drive concept started, that, in competition to a gas turbine, should give the possibility to convert low to medium mass flow on a high temperature level into usable shaft work economically. The idea was to replace the compressor by a screwtype compressor and the turbine by a screwtype motor. The resulting principle, a hotgas screwtype engine, was given the name GASSCREW, just to keep the thermodynamic equivalency to a gas turbine in mind. This paper, after the first GASSCREW was put into operation, describes the examination of the screwtype motor and its simulation based construction as well as the results obtained during operation on a temperature level up to 600°C. The verification of the generated simulation system delivers a contribution for an evaluation of its model quality and for further development. Based on the verificated simulation system, prediction of operating behaviour on higher temperature levels will be possible as well as an advancement to higher efficiencies and a more compact design with next generations of the GASSCREW. The construction of the GASSCREW contains in addition to the prediction of operating behaviour the calculation of the thermal and mechanical part behaviour and the tolerances that must be specified for the GASSCREWmotor with consideration of the rotor coating and the resulting clearances. The main focus of the experimental examinations is the steady operation of the thermally high loaded GASSCREWmotor. The treatment of the whole GASSCREW system is not aimed and shall be reserved for future studies. The experiments include recording of thermodynamic data, indication of the GASSCREWmotor, thermographic measuring of casing temperatures and the telemetric recordation of rotor temperatures depending on male rotor speed, motor inlet pressure and motor inlet temperature. Finally, a variation of cooling parameters shows, that a specific cooling method for the motor parts operated on such high temperatures is materialconditioned possible and essential, but to intensive cooling has negative effects on the energy budget of the GASSCREWmotor.en
