Qualification processes and communication structures of the 'co-manager'- on a typology of works councils

The co-manager type is receiving increasing attention. Taking as an example works councils of public transport companies this article looks at whether the co-manager differs from other (conventional, engaged and ambitious) types of works councils in regard to qualification processes and communication structures. Based on a written survey of all works councils it shows that co-managers make more use of further education offers and refer more often the acquired competences to other works councils? members by internal processes of knowledge transfer. The contact areas to the management are more pronounced without reducing the contacts to the unions. Additionally contacts to other works councils of public transport companies are emphasised; in this respect co-managers are manifestly more versatile and more sophisticated than their colleagues of the other works councils types.
