The increasing electrification of the road traffic requires the expansion of the charging infrastructure and the supply of charging stations to the same extent. As the development of autonomous vehicles continues, automatic charging systems for electric vehicles will become essential in the future. In this work, the development of an automatic conductive charging system for electric vehicles is presented. Based on the current state of the art, it is shown that first prototypes are already being developed, but no complete investigations of low-cost automatic charging systems with active markers on the inlet are known. For this reason, a low-cost and compact wall-mountable automatic charging system is developed first, which has only four actively controllable degrees of freedom. The missing two rotational degrees of freedom are compensated by an elastic compensation unit. In addition, a procedure for the automatic plugging process is presented based on the used strategy of inlet pose estimation with mounted infrared LEDs in the inlet. The procedure includes the search of the IR-LEDs with a simultaneous plausibility check of the arrangement of the found points, a pre-positioning with a following identification check of the vehicle, a visual servoing for the alignment between connector and inlet and a final insertion process. For the developed system, an investigation of pose estimation of the inlet with IR LEDs in the workspace of the automatic loading system is performed based on defined evaluation criteria. This investigation is extended by the strategy of pose determination using an AprilTag as a passive marker and by the strategy of a trained neural network to detect the inlet pose without any modification on the vehicle. Thus, advantages and disadvantages are worked out qualitatively and the strategies are compared. Finally, an evaluation of the system is performed in the context of various plugging tests in the system's workspace with different inlet orientations. The plugging results, the duration of the automatic plugging process and the forces and moments acting on the inlet are analysed. Based on these results, a recommendation for future action and standardization of automatic conductive charging of electric vehicles is finally made.
