The possibilities of the photocatalytic degradation of aliphatic and aromatic N-compounds by TiO2 as photocatalyst has been investigated. Different analytical methods for the determination of the used N-Compounds and their breakdown products were developed. The influence of relevant parameters e.g. the pH-Value, kind and concentration of the photocatalyst, structure of the N-compounds on the degradation rates and distribution of the photooxidation products was determined. Based on the obtained results possible degradation mechanisms were developed. Furthermore, the photocatalytic properties of doped and photoplatinized TiO2-powders were studied. Especially the influence of the doping on the electronic structure of the photocatalyst was theoretically and experimentally examined. Moreover, the possibilities of mineralization of N-compounds under use of immobilized pure and doped TiO2-powders were studied. The generated TiO2-coatings were characterized by surface analytical methods. With regard to a technical application the combination of photocatalysis with other wastewater treatment methods was investigated. Beyond that the conclusions drawn from the degradation of model substances showed also to be valid for real waste water samples as experienced from a diluted, liquid bovine manure. An upscaling of the laboratory experiments to pilot-plant scale under use of real solar radiation was realized.
