Title: Klassifikation von Datenreihen mit Hilfe des Lyapunov-Exponenten
The forecasting of time series is one of the primary tasks in the analysis and modeling of unknown processes. Knowledge of predictability of a given time series can also be used to initially introduce a coarse classification for the modeling of the underlying processes. The main aim was to find a facility for the separation into well-predictable and not-well-predictable processes without any information about the functional relationship of the process and with only the given data. One criterion for the separation is given by the size of the Lyapunov exponent, which was originally defined for deterministic observation series. This characteristic feature describes the long time behavior of the average logarithmic derivative. It illustrates the divergence of two different trajectories. However, it was shown that the Lyapunov exponent can also be analyzed and used for stochastic time series. In this case, the Lyapunov exponent can be defined as the expected value of a transformation of the given stochastic process. Based on these definitions it was possible to use the Lyapunov exponent for the separation into well-predictable and not-well-predictable processes as well as into stable and instable processes. For the evaluation of the decision of classification I created a new statistical test. On this way it is possible to draw a conclusion with regard to misclassifications. The test is based on a classical nonparametric test with the Lyapunov exponent in the test statistics. In this context the necessary sample has to be created. In this work I use the method of surrogates. Simulations verified the results. I applied the classification by dint of the Lyapunov exponent with the subsequent testing to the real world system consisting of data of BTA deep hole drilling.
