The operational conditions and the dynamic behaviour of modular multilevel converters (MMC) in high-voltage direct current (HVDC) systems lead to novel types of stress for the insulation. Therefore, and with respect to insulation coordination, a method for the design of necessary air clearances and the atmospheric correction of design voltages is presented for HVDC-systems. In the following, a simulation-based analysis of exemplarily resulting overvoltages at the cable sealing end respectively the overhead line terminal during pole-to-ground faults of a MMC-HVDC (symmetrical monopole, half-bridge topology) are carried out and concepts for a synthetic laboratory imitation of these voltages are discussed. The electric field distribution prior to dynamic events is significant in order to evaluate associated consequences for insulation concepts of HVDC systems. Therefore, methods for conductivity analysis gain in importance. For this purpose, an automated, modular, scalable and upgradeable test system is presented. The following introduced general modelling techniques allow the definition of requirements for accurate conductivity analysis under consideration of the electrical properties of the test setup and the electrical field distribution within guarded electrode arrangements. In addition, and under consideration of the time-dynamic of the absorption current, novel analysis and denoising routines for measurement data are presented. These methods allow an enhanced identification of the dielectric time domain response function of the investigated test sample. Within experimental studies of LSR- und XLPE-test samples, the overall performance of the test system and the novel analysis methods is successfully shown. Additional extensions of the test system for future investigation close this thesis.
