Abstract
In this paper we focus on a basic problem in teaching calculus: how to handle the idea of function composition? In correspondence with the theory of fundamental ideas we show how and why to pay attention to this problem. Moreover we discuss a possible teaching
concept that can be used as an analytical approach of the problem.
