This dissertation examines, using the Ruhr region as a case study, how the sustainable transformation of the mobility sector can be analyzed and shaped from a social science perspective. To this end, a Sociological Model of Sustainable Transformation (SMNT) is developed, integrating existing sustainability and transformation models within a multi-level approach. A literature review shows that the German mobility sector is failing to meet key sustainability targets. The empirical analysis combines the results of a survey of 10,782 university members in the Ruhr region with an agent-based transport simulation (MATSim). The survey reveals a discrepancy between the use of public transport and preferences for individual mobility, while also identifying five actor types. Five governance options are subsequently simulated. The results show that, in particular, improving cycling comfort can contribute to enhancing both social and environmental sustainability.
