Repairing and strengthening of existing aged steel-reinforced concrete structures is a major challenge. Today, much of the repair work completed is insufficient and brittle. A promising new solution for repair and strengthening tasks is the use of iron-based shape memory alloy (Fe-SMA). The pre-strained Fe-SMA components enable the pre-stressing of existing building components due to the heat-triggered contraction of the steel. Thus, deflections can be reduced or even recovered. In addition, ...
Interdisciplinarity broadens urban planning praxis and simultaneously deepens how urban research unfurls. Indeed, this breadth and depth diverges and converges the understanding of current and popular concepts such as temporary use (TU)—also recognized as short-term or temporally undefined use of space. Through a meta-research, or research about research approach employing socio-semiotics and bibliometric analyses for the first time in relation to TU, I clarify the increasing scholarly attent...
In inclusive dance settings, where people with different abilities and talents come together, the role of facilitators is essential in guiding the process of inclusion. Their behavior gives sensitive information to the individual about one’s status within the own-group affiliation (De Cremer, 2002, p. 1336). Even today, very little research on the motivation for facilitating inclusivity in dance contexts exists. This case study will examine the facilitator’s motivation by juxtaposing current ...
A definition of the Laplacian on Cartesian products with mixed boundary conditions using quadratic forms is proposed. Its consistency with the standard definition for homogeneous and certain mixed boundary conditions is proved and, as a consequence, tensor representations of the corresponding Sobolev spaces of first order are derived. Moreover, a criterion for the domain to belong to the Sobolev space of second order is proved.
Lightweight design is one of the current key drivers to reduce the energy consumption of vehicles. Design methodologies for lightweight components, strategies utilizing materials with favorable specific properties and hybrid materials are used to increase the performance of parts for automotive applications. In this paper, various forming processes to produce light parts are described. Material lightweight design is discussed, covering the manufacturing processes to produce hybrid components ...
Stochastic shortest path problems (SSPPs) have many applications in practice and are subject of ongoing research for many years. This paper considers a variant of SSPPs where times or costs to pass an edge in a graph are, possibly correlated, random variables. There are two general goals one can aim for, the minimization of the expected costs to reach the destination or the maximization of the probability to reach the destination within a given budget. Often one is interested in policies that...
Modern spray-coating processes are based on high-volume, low-pressure, airless atomization or high-speed rotary bell atomization, often assisted by electrostatic charging to increase the transfer efficiency. The process from the liquid film flow beneath the bell, through ligament formation and consecutive disintegration to droplet deposition, has been constantly explored during the evolution of automotive spray coating. This work proposes a set of dimensionless groups that fully describe the ...
Nucleation in continuously operated capillary coiled cooling crystallizers is experimentally investigated under the influence of ultrasound. It was found that there is no sharp boundary but rather a transition zone for nucleation under sonication. For this purpose, a tube with an inner diameter of 1.6 mm and a length of 6 m was winded in a coiled flow inverter (CFI) design and immersed into a cooled ultrasonic bath (37 kHz). The CFI design was chosen for improved radial mixing and narrow resi...
Flavour-changing neutral-current interactions of the top quark can be searched for in top-quark pair production with one top quark decaying to an up-type quark and a neutral boson, and they can be searched for in the single production of a top quark in association with such a boson. Both processes interfere if an additional up-type quark is produced in the case of single production. The impact of these interference effects on searches for flavour-changing neutral currents at the LHC is studie...
Increasing dynamics in solids featuring nuclei subjected to second-order quadrupolar interactions lead to central-transition spectra that undergo two consecutive line-shaped transitions. Conventional motional narrowing occurs when the molecular exchange rate is on the order of the strength of the dominant interaction. In a second step, the resulting intermediately narrowed spectra change further when the motion becomes faster than the Larmor precession rate, leading to terminally narrowed spe...
In this thesis, the novel Tensor Diffusion approach for the numerical simulation of viscoelastic fluid flows is introduced. Therefore, it is assumed that the extra-stress tensor can be decomposed into a product of the strain-rate tensor and a (nonsymmetric) tensor-valued viscosity function. As a main potential advantage, which can be demonstrated for fully developed channel flows, the underlying complex material behaviour can be explicitly described by means of the so-called Diffusion Tensor....
Long DNA molecule must not just be somehow stored within a tiny cell but also be accessible by protein machineries to allow for timely execution of key cellular events such as chromatin compaction, cell division, transcription, etc. My PhD aimed at identifying the Histone protein modifications that recruit proteins to DNA using genetically encoded unnatural amino acid mutagenesis. For example, using pBPA as a crosslinker in budding yeast, I identified a novel preference of the RSC Chromatin R...
Membrane proteins are essential for cell viability, as they are responsible for numerous regulatory processes like cell-cell communication, signal transduction or the transport of molecules across lipid bilayers. Furthermore, mutations in their amino acid sequence or altered three-dimensional (3D) conformations can lead to severe diseases. Based on their significant role, membrane proteins represent the majority of all drug targets (more than 60%). For a complete understanding of their functi...
5-methylcytosine (5mC) is a fundamental epigenetic modification in mammalian genomes involved in development, cell differentiation and genomic imprinting. In addition, aberrant DNA methylation patterns are responsible for the pathogenesis of many diseases including neurodegenerative disorders, cardiovascular affections and cancer. In this thesis, we describe the development of a novel method for image-based analysis of 5mC using pairs of fluorescent Transcription Activator Like-Effectors (TAL...
The study summarizes the central results of two surveys in the field of (fine dining) restaurants, which took place during the shutdown of restaurants due to the corona pandemic (Corona Shutdown) between 22 March and 10 April 2020. A total of 654 people took part in the survey who work in the catering trade as cooks (n = 289), service staff (n = 136) and restaurant owners (n = 125). Guests (n = 104) also participated in the survey. The central results are as follows: 50% of the restaurants in...

The minority status of women in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) professions makes their successful career development difficult. Due to gender-specific challenges, career dissatisfaction contributes to women dropping out of STEM careers. Therefore, women's subjective career success (SCS) is important to persist and progress in their STEM careers. This study analyzed the influence of different types of work motivation and the perceived career autonomy on SCS of women. S...
Purpose Due to distinct immuno- and neuro-modulatory properties, growing research interest focuses on exercise-induced alterations of the kynurenine (KYN) pathway in healthy and clinical populations. To date, knowledge about the impact of different acute strength exercise modalities on the KYN pathway is scarce. Therefore, we investigated the acute effects of hypertrophic (HYP) compared to maximal (MAX) strength loadings on the KYN pathway regulation. Methods Blood samples of twelve he...
