Title: Zur Bewertungstheorie von Angebotsoptionen im Kreditgeschäft
The typical lending behavior of a bank towards its on-banking clients is that the client (usually individuals and small to mid-sized corporates) should receive a firm price on a loan. This price will be offered not for acceptance or refusal, as in the capital markets, but can be valid for as long as six weeks. The firm price quotation over such a long period is nothing other than a free option for the client, whereby the lender (the bank) is the writer of the option (loanly ption). The underlying risk to the bank is the price risk of the bank's refinancing. In a competitive market environment it is absolutely crucial for the bank to know exactly what proportion of the margin achievable must be allocated for market risk. This thesis will examine this question of valuation. In the classical environment of option pricing theory markets are perfect and investors are rational. Within this framework the value of a loanly option is described by the well-known martingale approach of arbitrage-free pricing of contingent claims. The trivial result in perfect markets is altered whenintroducing segmented capital markets with two different classes of market participants. The thesis closes with a numerical analysis of loanly options based on the traditional term structure model of Ho and Lee.
