The present work deals with the structural investigation of silicon nano-ribbons on an Au(110) surface. Since the discovery of graphene, especially low-dimensional structures such as silicon nano-ribbons came into scientific focus, because they are predestined for applications in spintronics due to their electronic properties. Photoelectron spectroscopy is particularly suitable for the analysis of low-dimensional materials and their interface structure with the underlying substrate. A detailed chemical analysis using core level spectra of individual elements allows conclusions about local bondings of individual emitter atoms in the structure and their localization, i.e. at the surface or in the bulk. In addition, the signal intensity varies as a function of polar and azimuth angles due to diffraction and scattering of the emitted electron wave at adjacent atoms. From the resulting diffraction patterns the local environment of the atoms and the internal structure can be determined, allowing a detailed structural analysis. Here, all analysis was carried out in situ using synchrotron radiation at beamline 11 at the electron storagering DELTA. After successful preparation and chemical as well as structural analysis of the (2 × 1)-reconstructed Au(110) surface, the silicon nano-ribbons were prepared on the Au(110) substrate. The difference in the spectra between the Au 4f signals before and after silicon deposition shows a chemical bonding of the silicon atoms to the underlying substrate. The spectra of the silicon signal indicate that the silicon atoms are only located at the surface. Additionally, the silicon atoms occur in two different chemical environments in equal parts. The silicon diffraction pattern proves the growth in two chains of hexagonal ar- ranged silicon atoms with ’zigzag’-terminated edges. Each chain is located above a ’missing-row’ of the substrate. The strong interaction between the silicon nano-ribbons and the gold substrate results in a chemical bond bewteen some of the silicon and the gold atoms, which is the reason for the two chemical bondingenvironments of the silicon atoms.
