I²FG Impulse Forming Workshop 2013

The objective of the workshop is to bring together experts in order to present new research findings and discuss the different perspectives of future developments with respect to the technologies. It is an important forum for the exchange of knowledge and networking with the leading experts.

Impulse forming

Impulse forming or high velocity forming includes all processes converting stored energy in order to form workpieces in a very short time. Electromagnetic pulse forming, joining and cutting
This technology includes all production processes using the energy pulsed of magnetic fields to deform a workpiece made of an electrically highly conductive material. The following major process variants can be distinguished:
  • electromagnetic compression and expansion of tubes
  • electromagnetic forming of sheets
  • electromagnetic welding of tubular and sheet products
  • electromagnetic cutting and perforation

Electrohydraulic forming

During electrohydraulic forming, stored electric energy is suddenly discharged through a spark gap, so that the surrounding working medium (e.g. water) is ionised and vaporises, initiating a shockwave. Explosive forming
During explosive forming, the shockwave is initiated by a detonating explosive. In the operation, the surface of the workpiece is covered with the explosive and the detonation wave accelerates the workpiece directly.
